Have any of you ever stopped to ask Why we use a 12/12 light cycle for flower and a 18/6 for veg. I wanted to cut my electric usage and keep my plants from out growing my grow space so I cut the amount of light they get each day. I went to a 10/14 for flower 10 hours of light 14 dark and went to a 14/10 for veg. It's to early to tell for sure what affect this will have so far so good. What do you think about this.

It's the natural light cycle of the plants. It's mimicking the natural daylight hours from summer to winter. People have experimented with different light cycles and at times have stressed the plants bad enough to hermie them. 18/6 to 12/12 seems to be the best combination that makes your girls happy.

Are you aware that the only places on earth that get 18 hours of light a day are 60* north latitude and north of that. The other would be 60* south latitude and farther south In other words the polar ice caps. How well does weed grow there ?

the amount of money you think your saving really isnt that much by turning your lights of for an extra 2 hours for flower then 4 hours for veg.. your probably saving 1 or 2 dollars a month.. unless your running multiple 1000w bulbs then the savings are insignificant and the risk of hermie outways the cost much more..
http://en.seedfinder.eu/growing/energy-costs-calculator/
you can go there to use the energy cost calculator, just get your most recent energy bill and input the cost per killowatt hour (its in euros so ull have to convert dollars to euros)..
and then it will tell you how much evrything will cost the fans, the lights, all of it per day/month/entire grow... then convert it bak to dollars..
i have a closet grow so it only cost like 30 bux for the whole shabang...
this is what the end result will look like i have two 150w magnetic ballast, two cpu fans, one regular cirulation fan, an air purifier, and a t5 for cloning station. i did the calculation for 90 days of both sides on... and it only costs 50 bux USD.. $.22 cents a day...

A lot of strains actually will flower at 14/10, especially those that come from higher latitudes as they have to begin flowering earlier to avoid the cold temps that come earlier than they do farther south.

Stupid idea. In veg they will slow down growing due to it being so close to 12/12 , and in flower you will get a lot less as it will finish quicker and wont chunk up due to only 10 hours light. :wall:

You dont need homework to answer that.... How do ALL plants grow? MOTHER-FUCKIN-NATURE. They didnt start inside in a deep water bucket with nutes and HID lighting.
I just told you that there is no place on earth where the temp is suitable that gets 18 hours of light. So the practice of 18/6 did not come from nature. ( notice I said that without the gutter mouth)

here are some pics of my grow. As yo can see they have grown above the light. I can not raise my light any more and anything above the light is not going to do real well. If you read my original post I want to slow them down a bit so they stay under the light. I didn't want to argue about this. Just wondered where 18/6 and 12/12 came from since it is not possible in nature.

Hey I just found another fun fact. There are only 2 days a year that we have 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark. One March 22 and another Sept. 22. So where did 12/12 come from???

i think u have a valid question , and most ppl are too smart to see how dumb they sound .18 hours of light does not really happen in nature (fucking idiot) . but yes 18 hours is efficient for co2 gathering but guess what 24 hours is even more efficient for mj (c3 plants) . to answer the question about 12/12 thats mostly to do with less light being available during natures flowering time. 12/12 doesnt happen but its more efficient for switching to flowering. some ppl after switching to 12/12 for a few weeks bump up to 13.5/10.5

The 18 and 12 hour cycles are based FROM nature. They aren't exactly the same, but when you can control your environment indoors, generally the more light the better. This is why some people veg on 24hr cycles. Plus both of these numbers (18 and 12) can be used for EVERY strain... prolly has something to do with that.

to make a long story short. I am using about 15% less electric for my lighting so I am saving 15% on my lighting cost.

I think they came from High Times magazine and other 'common' grow guides from years ago. I used to get HT monthly and they always talked in terms of 24, 18, 14, 12, etc.

No, it's not nature but if you want to replicate nature you can buy a $1000 saltwater LED computer that will completely mimic it. Everything from the exact sunrise/sunset to cloudy days and even phases and the position of the moon!

Or you can buy a 4 dollar timer and achieve the same result.
