One of my HID bulbs has stopped working after only ~700 hours use. the other one is ofine and they are both in the same box. There is no physical damage to the bulb, and no burn marks- looks as good as new... Any particular reason that would cause this?

Ah ok. My ballasts are MaxiGrow ballast, sort of like budget system one, but it clear states on it 400watt MH/HPS. Its also a compact ballast that might be why.

Yes you can. As long as the wattage is the same and obviously the fitting for the reflector you can use any bulb brand On quality, i hear Sunmaster bulbs are very good, with there 600watt putting out 95000 lumens. Not sure bout 400watts tho. Dont know if you can get them outside UK.

Go online and get yourself a proper ballast and light setup. That looks like very hard work, and to be honest doesnt look fit for the job.

yeah, i do what a whole plant to go to seeds. and i cant really say how long they have been in flower as they are LR2's! all i know is that they are about 6 weeks in and starting to produce crystals all over the leaves, so i think i need to do it soon

whats up with these switchable ballasts. my ballast will automatically take MH or HPS bulbs.

What is the optimum position for HID lights to be in. I have 2 400watts about a meter (3ft) above the plants. the plants have grown really big for the strain already, but should the lights be lower to the plants?
