lol. I was a hard proponent for imperial until I got more into the metric side. I'm now a believer in Metric :S
as a machinist I use both all the time. my biggest problem is you have no equivelent to the ft, yard exe... so ppl are like my grow tent is 91cm x 91cm I really have to think about that. 3'x3' is much easier to picture or a yard by a yard.....

Ex naval engineer myself. I know exactly what you mean. Our standards forced me to use metric though, and since gotten used to it. Metric is actually really easy once you get the hang of it. With you guys though, the standards are still imperial, so it was easy for me to just brain dump imperial and focus on metric as its our standard now. You don't really have that option as imperial is the standard there.

I used to work in aerospace shops untill just a couple years ago and everything is still all standard in aerospace. now that im in automotive shops I really had to pick up metric but more along the lines of mm not cm so I still have to think about it anytime I see it.

now talk to me about thousandths of an inch and anything else thats standard, then I can visualize it. they actually convert it for us on our prints having both inches and mm shown which is very convenient. I guess it just comes down to what you use most. everything on our houses are inches and fractions so thats what everyone is used to.

Sweet gig. Interesting you brought that up about houses. We still use imperial for sq footage etc with regards to houses and buildings up here. Last I checked anyways. We still have imperial in our blood :P

Yeah our safety standards are pretty high. Need CSA approved safety boots an shit. I can understand why though, as insurance and workmans comp is sick of paying out for injuries. So they make you buy approved equipment, and take courses etc. Sucks.

No idea why we couldn't do it, we do have millwrights but I'm assuming you guys got the contract cheaper then what our local unions would do it for.

I kinda disagree with the protecting of our jobs. We had our largest influx of Temporary foreign workers in the country the past few years taking our jobs with piss poor market evaluations and manipulation, and if TPP is ratified between our countries, more of our work will be stolen by less developed countries that are also involved in the TPP. The fine print in our TPP basically says that companies/business won't need market assessments in order to hire foreigners over Canadians. Governments suck. :P

dont worry, we will be getting fucked by the TPP along with ya. I guess NAFTA didn't fuck us hard enough now here comes the TPP to put it in with no lube.

The machines we build are specialized which is probably why they didn't do it over there. only 5 companies in the USA do what we do so that says alot. I wish we would focus more on keeping american jobs home rather than shipping everything off shore. jobs have came back quite a bit though in the detroit area, been on 65+ hrs a week for over 3 years now.

I hear ya man, especially the bending over without the lube for yet a 2nd time. Glad to hear Detroit is picking back up though. I'm really hoping for a decent recovery in the American economy. Seeing as you guys are a huge trade partner to us. Like the saying goes, if you guys sneeze, we catch cold.

Best of luck

You can go to jail for a long time as a supervisor if your employees don't follow the rules now. We have some harsh safety laws.

wow that is pretty crazy. They just fine the company over here. most shops here dont have strict safty rules, it just depends on what the shop wants to enforce.
