Just the strain you are growing.
And sometimes its not, sometimes red stems show u that something is wrong with your plant(s) i know this from experience.....

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency: Magnesium deficiency will exhibit a yellowing (which may turn brown) and interveinal chlorosis beginning in the older leaves. The older leaves will be the first to develop interveinal chlorosis. Starting at leaf margin or tip and progressing inward between the veins....This can be quickly resolved by watering with 1 tablespoon Epsom salts/gallon of water. Until you can correct nutrient lockout, try foliar feeding. That way the plants get all the nitrogen and Mg they need. The plants can be foliar feed at ½ teaspoon/quart of Epsom salts (first powdered and dissolved in some hot water). When mixing up soil, use 2 teaspoon dolomite lime per gallon of soil.
If the starting water is above 200 ppm, that is pretty hard water, that will lock out mg with all of the calcium in the water. Either add a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of epsom salts or lime both will effectively reduce the lockout.Mg can get locked-up by too much Ca, Cl or ammonium nitrogen. Don't overdo Mg or you'll lock up other nutrients.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency:
Fan leaves are dark green or red/purple, and may turn yellow. Leaves may curl under, go brown and die. Small-formed buds are another main symptom.
Phosphorus deficiencies exhibit slow growing, weak and stunted plants with dark green or purple pigmentation in older leaves and stems.
Some deficiency during flowering is normal, but too much shouldn't be tolerated. Red petioles and stems are a normal, genetic characteristic for many varieties, plus it can also be a co-symptom of N, K, and Mg-deficiencies, so red stems are not a foolproof sign of P-deficiency. Too much P can lead to iron deficiency.
Purpling: accumulation of anthocyanin pigments; causes an overall dark green color with a purple, red, or blue tint, and is the common sign of phosphate deficiency. Some plant species and varieties respond to phosphate deficiency by yellowing instead of purpling. Purpling is natural to some healthy ornamentals.

Post a picture... Having red or purple stalks is not GOOD.. 99% of the time..

Purple stems on your FAN leaves are NOT serious but should be kept under watch...

Sorry, I'm growing a blue family strain and most of my fan leaves have purple stems as this is what they are supposed to do. Not too sure about a purple main stem as mine are green.

they are just youngsters right now and some of them do and some dont its weird they all get the same about of water and light and everything so you think its the strain

i've got a question, i've got a nearly 3 week old plant where leaves on opposing sides of the main stem began developing yellow spots on them, and i recently noticed that the underside of the stem for those leaves is a reddish purple. i've got 3 plants in a window sill like container and one is doing great and the 3rd has some yellow spots that are turning brown, but still has green stems. they're all in miracle grow soil and have been getting the same amount of water, so i'm not quite sure why this is happening, any suggestions?

Bigger leaves are turning a yellowish color while the smaller leaves are green.
  • Nitrogen deficiency - add nitrate of soda or organic fertilizer.
its under the cures might be this wait for a second opinion

I've heard that miracle grow isn't high enough in nitrogen to sustain a young plant. have you ph'd the soil?

Sorry Aces, it doesn't sound like the strain. Mine only started changing colour about 2 weeks into flowering. Like the pro's have said it more than likely means something is wrong. Probably the phosphate deficiency. Have you started adding fert's yet?

As long as your stalk is not red or purple you are probably ok.. Skunk.. I looked at your pictures this morning and your plants were AWESOME!!

MG soil has caused many growers a lot of problems and others have had great success with it.. It is a crap shoot with MG soil. It is very important to GET A PH KIT and PH your water....

MG fertilizers are fine and are easy to use.

Aces, can you read your mg bag and get the nutrient content for knowm? It'll be a great help if you can post this info.
