this is happening on two of my plants. in my case I don't believe it to be any deficiency. it's happening naturally on two of the same strain, I welcome it as it looks better too.

I've heard lots of things about what purple stalks/stems means, but as long as the plant appears to be doing fine in all stages, I say don't worry about it.

DO NOT PANIC. A seedlings purple stem doesn’t necessarily indicate an unhealthy plant. Please take the following possibilities into consideration:

1 - Purple Stems could be a result of that wonderful thing we call genetics, if this is the reason, you are to expect a purple stem throughout the life of the plant. It must be noted that purple stems aren’t a dominant trait, and are rarely genetically induced.

2 - A baby sprout with a purple stem is almost always 100% natural. Young seedlings are still adjusting to their environment and may be slightly lacking in a Nutrient. If this is the case, healthy plants will regain their green/greenish-brown color within a few days to a week or two.

3 - If you have ruled out the possibilities of genetics and the seedlings adjustments to life, you should begin looking for a nutrient deficiency. Purple stems are commonly caused by a Phosphorous (P) or Magnesium deficiency, if there is a P deficiency you may also notice symptoms such as brittle leaves or greyish spots. To assist the uptake of Phosphorous (as well as most other nutes) you should ensure the pH is slightly acidic-- 6.0 will suffice.

I can't take credit for this. Someone else is responsible for these wise words, they just seem pretty pertinent.

Just go to Wal-Mart, pick up some cheap epsom salt. 1 Tbs per Gallon...water and wait! There's always a little Science in everything we do in life...let's just not overdo it. Life's not that complicated. Plus check out what chemical fertilizers are made from. You may decide against it if you knew. Nature will provide all you need if you do a little research into it. Later all.

I have two seedlings inside and 4 outside. The 4 outside have puprle stems and the two inside have green stems. So i beleive that purple stems are an indication of cold temperature.

smoking tobacco cause purple stems. i dunno.
i have 9 ww and 3 mazar x afghans. all ww have purple somewhere on the main stem, branches, the sun fan stems (but are grown indoors), but somewhere there is purple. on 2 of the 3 mazar x afghan there is purple but 1 MA. 2 of the MAs are 2 of the most healthy looking plants i have ever grown.
i may be too high on the ph. and i have seen some hot indications on some plants and a little starvation on others.
i am correcting ph to 6.7 daily here recently and feed 20% of a 30-10-10. here soon i will go to 50% of a 20-12-12. i am also using molasses; or sometimes grape sweet, always superthrive, and lower my well water of 7.0 to 6.5-6.8 with vinegar and/or lemon juice concentrate.
T5, T8 and 496 watts of CFL in miracle grow organic garden soil.
i am 10 days or so till forced flowering. because space limits.
purple stems was not on my mind till i read this thread.
is it good bad yes no maybe better same worse?
has anyone here had purple stems and did something and the purple stems went away?

and the phosphorous thing..when i mixed soil i applied a coverage of bone meal in each container on every transplant.

what me thinks and another moonshiner is that once in the plants life it was stressed someway or the other, and/or simple genetics. there is nothing you can do once the purple stems appear they will always be there.

Mine have purple stems on the tops of a few top branches. The leaves up top are showing red veins too. This isn't the first time ive noticed. Im about a month into flower, and it seems like the purple shows any time I'm doing serious ph adjustments, or adding nutes. The color is accompanied by that familiar skunk smell. The smell comes and goes. Im guessing the nutrient change and ph change make the purple more dominant, but seems like the buds are filling nicely, and the small reminds me that the plant is a growin! Im gna chock it up to red stems = eating fert like mad. Anyhow, I quit worrying about the color because the rest of the plant isnt showing anything out of the ordinary. Ive attached a pic of the red in the stem at one point during early flowering i think. The red now is almost purple, and it looks lovely, Here's some pics of em. The red is generally on the top side of the stems..if you'll notice.

Can I get a HELL YEAH for keeping a good record book. Best of luck...

I have also had some purple fan stem issues. my great white X ??? has had purple fan stems for quite a while and ive never thought nothing of that. but recently about 4.5 weeks into flowering i finally fed it and the other bag seed i had a 1/2 strenght dose of liquid bone meal 0-12-0 and now the bag seed is starting with the purple fan stems up top. only 3 days after the feeding. could be a reaction to nutes.

and i had a bunch of clones i left in solo cups, only one had purple stalk+stems from the begining. after i had left them in the cups for 4 WEEKS! almost all of them(6) had developed all purple stalks. i watered them every day but i didnt really want to put them in the dirt untill they were hardend off. so it must be somewhat related to stress if the whole stalk is purple.

hope this helps.
