That's funny. I had a friend of a friend that I smoke with from time to time come by to check out my grow and after he looked at it, he said "Dude, that's awesome. The only way it could get better is if you had fish in your buckets shitting." Needless to say, I didn't believe that shit. He was growing way before I ever thought about it, but he also told me that my plants wouldn't grow any bigger after I switched them to 12/12....

I think the fish thing is a really terrible idea. If you want to collect fish shit, do it, but leave the fish out of it, man. Poor little fishies

well i could just move them to a secondary tank rez and recycle there water through my plants soil and soiless medium run it through the filter and back up to the other rez useing pumps and what not does anyone have an issue with that lol

Keeping your fish separate is a much better idea. You can look up aquaponics in which you add no additional fertilizer and your plants act as the biological filter for your fish, but pot is such a nutrient intensive feeder that you will have poor results - this is much more suited for small green leafy veggies. Using aquarium water and the vacuumed up mulm (solid fish shit) from the bottom of the tanks is great for your plants, they will love the N as well as the microorganisms in the water - it however will not be enough nutrients to grow with alone.

I highly recommend you separate your fish into a separate tank, both the fish as well as your plants will thank you - don't recirculate the water between the two just do a weekly transfer of fish water into your hydro res. You should be doing a weekly water change on your fish tank anyways (25-50% not 100% of the water)

u ever seen a MJ plant in the wild growing in a river with fish. Do some research on Aquaponics. all your doing is depriving a fish of a somewhat comfy life. there is no benefit to the fish. best you could do is take out the fish, buy more nutes and do it right.

Well, after a little searching, I found some pertenant information that could be used by you. This is a post from a forum that I frequent alot. Jvision is the member I pulled this article from and he has well over 30 years experience in aquaculture. The post is geared towards a heavily planted tank that may contain a few fish but would be able to be used for hydroponic setup as the feeding schedule for the plants are outlined. just figure out the volume of water in your hydro system and use the corresponding schedule. Thanks again Jvision for all the reasearch you do.

All this being said, you must remember that this person is referring to a tank with a filtration system and a thick substrate (gravel bottom). Like I mentioned in my previous post, you will have to concern yourself of two things, ammonia and nitrate spikes which will occur in the first month or two with a new setup. Ammonia will burn gills and roots in high enough concentrations and in a barren system like a hydroponics resivoir it is very possible to occur. nitrate, while useful to plants is like CO to fish and can cause a rapid die off which in turn can cause a spike in ammonia levels.

I am assuming that you do not have any substrate in your resivoir where the fish are being housed so you really should create a centralised system to which all water returns to a tank with a filter, gravel, and even a few bunches of hygrophyllia, ludwigia, vallisneria, etc.

General Dosing Guideline for High Light and well planted aquariums. Macronutrients should be dosed on even days, and Micronutrients dosed on odd days.

10- 20 Gallon Aquariums
+/- 1/8 tsp KNO3 (N) 3x a week
+/- 1/32 tsp KH2PO4 (P) 3x a week
+/- 1/32 tsp K2SO4 (K) 3x a week

+/- 1/32 tsp (2ml) Trace Elements 3x a week

Hey guys: give the poor devil a break. He's trying something different. It's not new, but it is being done elsewhere in the world and what he's doing is just a new twist on it. I thought we were supposed to help and encourage each other here? You guys are being kind of brutal aren't you?

I believe it was in a gardening magazine you get for free from the hydro stores that had a very interesting article on a restaurant on a desert island in the Caribbean that raises fish in tanks, (they looked like Tilapia). They feed the fish and their effluent feeds their hydroponic garden and hat's what they serve there for dinner: fish, salads and veggies.

Some of you had a good point, but you don't have to insult the man to make it, do you? Just because he's not doing his thing your way is no reason to take him to task. Full strength, our nutes will probably kill his fish eventually, but sucker fish are pretty hardy and hard to kill that's probably why they're such a successful specie. Now I don't think he's going to be successful either but lets give him a chance and see what he comes up with, okay? HSA

You think this is the first 14 year old to mix fish and nutrients without trying to understand anything about the effects on the fish or the plants. This isn't forward thinking at all, it is careless and useless for the plants and harmful to the fish.

Ahh yes it is...I would call it discovery on a personal level. now a bit narrow sighted to have gone from seeing or hearing a mention of this technique to instituting it without apperant research into the subject.

Also for those of you who have mentioned about using natural filtration to treat raw sewage, there is at least five stages in that process to which the sewage first goes into a setteling pond and then goes through a series of bogs to which each bog houses a diffent group of organisims that feed off the various components of the sewage. depending on what needs to be removed at a certain stage of treatment will determine what organisims will be exposed first to the effluent. Fish are usually towards the end of the process and serve more of a housekeeping purpose for the ponds that they are housed in.

Most of these systems have 5 to seven stages and I have seen as high as 12 stages but the end result is water that is extremely pure (98% or better) and with near zero gram negative bacilli. These systems take up acres as everything must trickle through as opposed to high volume mechanical and chemical filtration treatment plants
