All this being said, you must remember that this person is referring to a tank with a filtration system and a thick substrate (gravel bottom). Like I mentioned in my previous post, you will have to concern yourself of two things, ammonia and nitrate spikes which will occur in the first month or two with a new setup. Ammonia will burn gills and roots in high enough concentrations and in a barren system like a hydroponics resivoir it is very possible to occur. nitrate, while useful to plants is like CO to fish and can cause a rapid die off which in turn can cause a spike in ammonia levels.

I am assuming that you do not have any substrate in your resivoir where the fish are being housed so you really should create a centralised system to which all water returns to a tank with a filter, gravel, and even a few bunches of hygrophyllia, ludwigia, vallisneria, etc.

General Dosing Guideline for High Light and well planted aquariums. Macronutrients should be dosed on even days, and Micronutrients dosed on odd days.

since i didnt know it all. and never claimed i did. i didnt say i didnt need advice on this idea .
i came on here looking for things i didnt know on the subject. and you know what i got it in many
forms ., from insults to greatly appreciated web sources. i did some mods to my setup.. but its iffy
im still working it out. if he can last another week ill be able to move him i dont have a fish tank sorry .

it would be stupid to even try this. Plecos need light just like other fish plus you dont want light in your res wich will attract algae wich may be what the pleco feeds(some prefer protein) on but your roots will suffer. this would maybe only work if you were using straight water in a opaque container........trust me it wont work. they do have some set ups you can buy that kinda do this but its mainly house plants that can thrive with their roots constantly in water. and then they only put Betta in there cuz they are labyrinth fish and take air from the surface. the nutes alone would kill the fish in like 48hrs or less.
