First Grow: Are My Girls Looking, Okay?

If I remember correctly, my first AKs gave about a third of the wet weight when dry...but I'm too lazy to go look it up in my grow notes. lol Based on that, I figured 2.5 or 2.6oz for a final tally on all of it. I was also able to save 39g of trimmings for making ice hash. I was also able to harvest 37 seeds of my 'Hakuna Matata' crossbreed (AK48 and Blue Mystic). I have 7 others that may be too immature to sprout, but the 37 is a pretty good outcome. Now I can only hope that they will produce a good product when I grow it. On that note, is there any reason that I need to let the seeds dry out some, or can I germ one right away and get started on growing some Hakuna Matata?

Chief - I remember the old ball and chain comment...I think that was why I figured you were a guy! I hope they can change your profile to 'Ms Ganja', but I'm guessing it won't happen since theres probably too much that would have to figure into a change in the program to bother doing it for just a few women growers. We will see...

Mandi, here is what I found out about seeds after harvesting:

Store seeds in a cool, dry, dark place. The seeds are viable and ready for planting as soon as they are harvested, BUT they may grow sickly plants. Let the seeds dry out a month or two before planting. Seeds with a hard outer cask are most likely to sprout and grow well.

Hope that helps.....I made a big mistake by planting 24 seeds that were harvested and nothing has sprouted after a week! Lesson learned here!

Hey Chief...have not been able to sample it yet due to a crazy work schedule - but I will likely give it a go in a day or two. I was off on the guesstimate of dry weight though, she only gave an ounce and three quarters, rather than the two plus I was hoping for. Oh well, at least it should be smooth!

Quick update on Fat Ass and Shorty...both are doing well and growing some decent looking buds! Fat Ass is bulking up enough that the smaller colas are starting to drop due to their weight. I've had her main cola tied off for a while, since she had a habit of leaning too close to the lights - it looks like I might have to truss up the sides now too. I think she may make up for her mothers shortcomings when it comes to harvest yield... Shorty is looking much better than her mother did at this stage, although I don't expect any more than an ounce from her (or her mother-when its finally dry).

Smoke report on the AK48 (my first try at drowning) ... It was a smaller yield than my first ones, but there seems to be a bit more of a body stone, so I guess I had more amber trichs on her this time. That is what I was aiming for, so I guess I chopped her at the right moment. It was a smooth smoke, and I've got a friend who had the earlier AK and thinks this one is alot better - I tend to agree. I'm a fan of the drowning now too, even though it seems to take longer for them to dry out. -Mandi

Hey Mandi when you drown your plants it will take longer for then to dry. Once they dry you can smoke your weed and curing is not necessary, The smoke is smooth and the weed taste clean. Fat ass and Shorty is growing some nice size colas, you are doing a great job with them. Congrats on your harvest of 1.5 ounces of some dank ass weed which you DON'T have to buy and you grew it yourself

Hey manditroy! Hope things have been well! I was hoping you could spare some advice on flushing for your Ak48's. Mine are at day 34 of flowering and I've read that they could finish as early as 48 days. Even if they take 60, if I plan to flush for 2 weeks I need to decide soon.

Can you offer a good suggestion on when to begin a flush for ak48? Heres a pic:

I wouldn't expect them to finish in 48 days - that is really only in the most ideal conditions. Mine were not ready until at least 8 weeks the first time, and I let the smaller buds go as long as 10 weeks to be sure they were worth it. The second batch of AKs went 9 weeks, but they were even better than the first ones...I think the drowning was good for the smoke too! In the long run, it will be better all around if you give them time - a bigger harvest and nicer buds. If you have a scope, you can watch the trichs to be sure you chop at just the right time. (If you don't have one, you can get a 30x or 40x on ebay for about $4-5.) If I were to guess, I would say that you should plan for them to be done around the end of the 8th or 9th week of flowering. I have not flushed mine before - just did the drowning technique on the most recent, beginning about week 8 and going for just over a week long.

Look at the trichs through a scope, yea... I'll probably get a lighted scope at radio shack tomorrow but what will the trichomes look like when its time to chop? not clear, but amber? or cloudy?

I don't really like those tiny scopes from Radio Shack, and they're much more expensive than the one I got on ebay. It's actually more of a jewelers loupe - a 40x lens about the size of a quarter, and even has an LED light. I paid less than $5 for it! It took just a few days to be shipped, and there are plenty of sellers to choose from in the US or Asia. The larger lens is so much better than the one in the store, and the whole thing is very compact.

As for when to chop, that depends on what kind of high you like...generally, the more amber you have when you cut, the more body stone you will have. The THC changes as the trichs move from clear, to cloudy, to amber -I think it's CBN that increases with amber- try a search to find out more on the subject. I like at least 20-25% amber, as I want a bit more body stone and less head buzz. You should know that my AK48 was a 'creeper' that took about fifteen minutes to hit, so I would suggest going easy on it for the first time until you see how it ends up for you...

Quick update...Fat Ass was chopped early last week and will be ready for a final dry weigh in very soon. She should be in the 2.5oz range I'm guessing...
Shorty has finally finished her drowning and will be starting the drying process now. She won't be yielding much - probably under an ounce - since the strain is a lighter, fluffier bud compared to the AK48. I like the body high from the Short Rider, but would much prefer the higher yields like the AK gives. Can anyone suggest some decent yielding strains that give a good body stone/pain relief? I need something that is fairly easy to grow and not too smelly. Anyone have some favorites that fit the bill? Short Rider seems to be a bit sensitive to heat, so I'd prefer a hardy strain that can take less than ideal grow conditions...

Oh yeah, BTW...my Blue Mystic just showed sex today - it's a GIRL, finally!!! I've got plans for this little lady to have some babies from one of my (many) earlier boy mystics. A couple dozen seeds would be perfect for keeping the strain going strong for future grows. I'm hoping for good things from this girl, since she was such a long time coming!
