Currently, CCA and GEO Group — the second largest private prison company in America — own 87 facilities across the country. When these companies, both publicly traded corporations, lose contracts at their prisons, they seek out other people to incarcerate from state corrections departments, the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), sheriffs’ offices, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In doing so, they encourage decision makers to put people behind bars, diverting attention and resources away from making the criminal justice system more humane. Lobbying disclosure records show that CCA and GEO Group have strong presences in the offices of government officials. In 2014, CCA had 103 lobbyists working in 25 states and 25 lobbyists in Washington, D.C. GEO Group had 68 lobbyists working in 15 states and 14 lobbyists in D.C.

I can actually agree. The concept of privatization is a right wing idea. "The private sector can do it better, and more efficiently," the saying goes. There has to be a reason states started using private companies. If the job was washing police cars, or something of less human in its substance it wouldn't be an issue. But in reality I'm sure they're cheaper, they pay their employees a lot less, but from a bottom line perspective they probably do a better job cost wise.

But people are generally not as well housed at private institutions. This shouldn't be a business. Its morally equivalent to being a slaver.

Your government is the slaver. It is the one responsible for incarcerating so many people.

They aren't "private prisons" in the free market sense though,since they work in conjunction with the present court system which is a kind of forcibly held monopoly used as their feeder system.

Theses kinds of prisons have a vested interest in maintaining the present monopolistic judicial system, rather than having a market featuring competing "courts".

I think we need to re-think our entire court system. We punish people for doing things we dont like.

Rather than that we should have a system that seeks restitution for someone who harms another person or people.

The current system is a total waste of resources.

You are correct sir.

The current system does not feature two important things.

First it relies heavily on malum prohibitum things as being "crimes". Which is absurd, since a crime requires a real victim.

Second it is a forcibly held monopoly, immune to customer feedback, and the market forces that competition would provide if it were allowed to exist.

The notion that the "3 branches of government" are enough to ensure neutrality has been proven demonstrably false countless times.

Market feedback is a component that many people ignore or don't even know what an important role it should play in keeping poor business practices from growing.

Bullshit. When you're white, you can rape unconscious women and be sentenced to 6 months in jail, or be convicted of raping TWO women and get probation. If those cats were black? Nah, I'm not singling out my race, the "justice" system is.
