I am pretty sure two of these failed on me:

I think it was heat. They were mounted to the 2" x 36" profile heatsink running passive. pushing 5 vero10. I have to order some parts for repair and probably mount them off the heatsink a ways and add a fan. LOL! Probably just a fan for the driver on each one.

They ran great and were almost always on since built just a month or two ago. It got warm fast and I think it did them in.

Does anyone know of the heatsink size I would need for 4 cxa3950? I want to use active cooling.

I'm either looking into cpu coolers but I am unsure of the size I need. I can seem to find big heatsinks in europe (germany). If I just went with one heatsink, what is a good size?

Why go with the cxb3590? This is the area I just can't wrap my head around :D
They're the same price and slightly more efficient. That's quite understandable, isn't it?
e: They also have slightly lower Vf, making them a much better fit for MW HLG-185H.

Folks, my design entails connecting a pontoon with 2cxb3590 @.700mA (72v) to each end of the optic vero 360. Is there an excellent match to power 2 cobs at a time? Or, if my best bet is to use the HLG-185H-C700 to power both pontoons, is there a tidy way to manage wiring these together with the 12x18 optic in the middle. There is plenty of space on tbe heat sinks.

Appreciate any thoughts. Im only as far as the heatsinks and aluminum angle and bolts so far.

I have my pontoons powered separately. Makes it a little more convenient in that each module can be powered separately. It can be tough to find drivers to match everything though.

If you are willing to take a hit on shipping you can check out lsdpower.com, tons of options. Can't imagine you wouldn't be able to find the driver you want there.

Lpc 100 should work..cheaper option no dimming
Hlg 120c....will work with dimming

Maybe just screw the driver onto the optic housing. Run the wires into the optic case and connect the ac there. Run dc wires into the case and have them come out the sides where the pontoons will be. Rubber grommets to protect the wires running through holes...something like that. Maybe dc wires held with wire clips straight to the pontoons...

something so the cover on the optic can still open and wires won't get eaten by the fans....:-P

Im leaning towards making each pontoon autonomous.

I want to maintain high efficiency so id like to stick with a high efficiency driver. If i were to use the hlg 120c 700 do i lose much efficiency by not matching up closely with the available voltage? The driver is perfect for three cobs how much efficiency is lost by running just 2?

I am most grateful for explanations and suggestions.

The driver data sheet has the info..

I'm not really familiar with every driver, I just looked quickly. Should let supra give out the driver info..lol. The initial spec i saw showed the voltage on the hlg 120 .700ma only enough for two 72v 3590s...upon review of datasheet it can run 3. Might be other combos yet...does take time to zero in on the perfect driver.

Glancing at that graph it looks like almost nothing is lost at 66%,115ac 2cxb would be 66% of max load. THE GRAPH INDICATES ABOUT 91%. That figure is acceptable.

Someone posted earlier, could just run them at 1a and have a larger power range at peak efficiency.

But, if you know what the max power you want to run is than I don't think its a bad idea to run at .700ma. 72w is a bit much to run from one emitter unless you'll have room to run the light high up

I need to go hunting for a 500ma driver for a veg light myself..

I think it makes sense to run them at .7mA. ~51% efficiency.

1- It works well with the vero 29s as far as wattage and canopy spacing.
2- It is not too crazy of a wiring challenge.
3- It allows the cxb pontoons to be modular.
4- I can live with a 1-2% efficiency loss.
5- it allows for an additional cob to be added without any other adjustments, slightly increasing efficiency

The graph was indispensable in figuring this out satisfactorily.

FYI, I blew one of these up last night. I had it hooked up to my killawatt and kept turning up the amperage pot. It got to about 160W at the plug and then i heard it pop and that's all she wrote. I'm only out $15 but I'm a bit bummed that I broke it.
the 2nd one died yesterday (running at 100W draw). SO, I'd definitely not recommend this particular driver

Ive also blown a few cobs in my trial runs, but i started cheap just to see how feasible this is for me. Ive got 12 Osram GW KAGBH cobs.

I dont want to clutter you guys with the spec sheet, but each cob runs at 32V with 500mA (36V 700mA maximum).

SO if i have a 96V 1.2amp china driver from an old blurple unit, will this schematic split the amps in half?

32*3 =96V, and then 2 parallel chains to split the amps
