Initial thoughts
Starting in soil in too big of pot causes slow growth
Ultimately it will learn to spread out in that pot and have a growth spurt
But next time start in smaller pots and leave room to add dirt to cover the stem if it gets stretchy

this is incorrect. usually the problem with a seedling in a large pot is the grower and their ability to properly maintain soil moisture levels. the plant does not 'know' how large the pot is as a seedling.

I'm only telling him the pot is the issue because it is much easier to start with a small pot on seedlings due to poor watering habits
Than using a final pot as a starter

I think it's better to just say that outright instead of propagating incorrect information and grower myths, that's all.
