Yet Another Noob's First Grow

Hey there RollItUp. Been using this site as a great reference for getting my own little setup going. There have been a lot of useful tips I've picked up here, so I figured I owed the site another "study" into indoor growing. This is my first ever grow. My materials are as follows:

  • Secret Jardin DR60 II Grow Tent
  • 250w HPS MH Grow Light Digital Ballast Kit
  • Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Happy Frog soils in a 50/50 mix
  • PH treated distilled water (probably overkill)
  • Plastic 2-gallon pots
  • GrowBright 6 Inch Inline Hydroponic Air Carbon Filter
  • Oscillating tower fan
  • Fox Farm Grow Big, Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom, Cha Ching, Beastie Bloomz and Open Sesame Nutrients
  • LEDwholesalers GYO2402 6-Inch 240 CFM Air Duct Inline Hydroponic Booster Fan (for exhaust)
  • Acu Rite Indoor Humidity Monitor
  • 6 inch aluminum ducting

I have two plants going right now; a feminized Emerald Triangle Bubba 76 and a feminized Samsara El Alquimista (both freebies from Attitude). I figured if I'm going to be messing anything up, better to do it on freebies instead of the White Widow .

I started germinating the seeds on 8/23 and by 8/25 I was planting them in the pots they will be grown in (to avoid transplant shock). They sprouted on 8/28.

So as of today they have been above soil for nine days. I haven't given them anything besides ph-treated water and light on an 18/6 schedule. I have been keeping the light roughly a foot above the plants. Luckily for me, my tent is right beside my a/c unit and has been keeping the tent at 75 degrees F consistently. The humidity stays at about 35% with the light on and close to 50% with it off. I use passive intake on both sides of the tent and that works well with my exhaust fan (which runs 24/7). The oscillating tower fan is for air circulation and I feel that it is more than enough for a 2'x2' tent.

So here come the questions: How long should I wait before giving the nutes? Some people start them right away, most say to wait 2-4 weeks. I don't plan on going nute crazy to begin with, probably starting with a 1/4 concentration.

Also, how often do you think I SHOULD be watering them? I have been watering them every two days to start but decided to skip watering yesterday and they actually look a little less droopy. Every four days sound good?

And scrogging. Is there going to be a significant difference in result from using a scrog method to just leaving them be? I wouldn't say I'm too lazy to try it but I would certainly like to skip anything that isn't going to make a huge difference in the end.

Don't worry, I'm not going to ask about yield though I do want to ask if anyone has tried these two strains before? Since they were freebies my gut tells me they are going to be crap. The world wide web doesn't seem to have a lot of info on these two specific strains.

Other than that, maybe just any tips you more experienced growers have accumulated throughout the years would be much appreciated. I'm sure I'm missing some sort of technique that would be of tremendous help.

Sorry if the end of this post is mostly rambling. This blunt is almost finished. :bigjoint:

Thanks for reading guys.

good questions. sounds like you did some homework. water when pot feels light in weight. feed when it starts to show some growth. by the fourth node or so. scrogging is fun, and spreads the nuggets out nicely. some say training increases yield. i'm not so sure. i think its more strain-dependent. LST is similar, and i've been becoming a big fan of it.

Hey man thanks for the reply. And yeah, about a month's worth of homework lol. Started with no tent and a mylar-walled closet with cfl's and solo cups. Read how HID lighting is all but essential. I honestly expect someone to tell me that 250w mh and hps lighting isn't enough and that I should have gone for 400. For two plants though I feel like 250w should be plenty. I'm ready for the long haul brother. The only thing I have yet to do is install the gigantic carbon filter (I figured why waste the filter when there is no smell yet). Also, will two plants put out an unbelievable smell? I have a friend that has a "garden" in his backyard and the smell isn't overpowering when you are in it. Almost more of a minty smell in my opinion. Should I be panicking about these girls reeking in the future? I even bought some Ona Gel as an extra precaution.

Yeah that's what I figured. Other than that, how are my girl's looking? Beautiful I hope. I plan on updating this as often as I can (remember).

Thanks man I appreciate it. So now for a new problem: the closeup picture I took of the El Alquimista seedling yesterday shows brown on the leaves. So I looked at her today and sure enough, brown specks. Not a lot of brown, but enough to concern me. I moved the light up a few inches thinking I may be burning my baby. Is this what it is? It really shouldn't be nute burn since I haven't given them any nutes. Here is a closer pic.

Am I able to test the Ph runoff with the liquid Ph up and down kit? I don't have one of those meters that everyone seems to have. Now the Bubba has some brown spots. I really don't like them. Also, the leaves are kind rough and dry. :(

First picture is the light's height. Second is the brown on Bubba 76 and third is brown on El Alquimista. I just moved the light a few inches higher than what's in the picture.

Also I've been PHing the water as close to 5.8 as possible. I read on the FoxFarms site that their soils are all between 6.3 and 6.8. So could the Ph really be the culprit? The spots are only on the leaves on the bottom node of both plants while the new growth on top looks as green as ever. I found a chart that says a 250w mh light should optimally be between 6-13 inches away. The closest I've ever had it was 12. Am I losing effectiveness now?

I would back the light to about 12-14" from the top of your plant and mist/spray the plant with plan water (ph around 5.0-6.0). As far as testing the ph, yes you can use the test kit that comes with the ph up/down but it will be hard to see the color change. This is a good guide to follow.

When I water I usually don't water to the point of it coming out of the bottom holes of the pot. Should I water the hell out of them so I can test what comes out of the bottom?

I wouldn't say to water the hell out of them but you want the pot that the plant is in to be a little bit heavy. From what "I" have done, I would water until I would get a bit of run off then I would drain the run off into to a glass and test it, I would do this for for each plant but then I also have a Hanna Multimeter to test with. I would say to check craigslist for a soil and water meter, you can find them really cheap just make sure they can show you the operation of the meter to make sure it works, and some times you can even get lucky at some discount stores.

Ok I bought a soil Ph meter ($11 on EBay, actually cheaper than the liquid one) and it should be here in a few days. I moved the light up a few inches so now I just wait anxiously I guess lol. The funny thing is I wouldn't have even noticed the leaves turning brown if I didn't take a picture of them for this thread.

They can get costly, I got mine on craigslist for $50.00, the Hanna HI 98129 pH/Conductivity/TDS Tester (low range EC measurement) I only have a liquid tester because I am more of a hydro grower. Once you can test the moister and the ph of your soil, you be so much better off.
