Hello fellow growers and DIY enthusiast's, another very happy Cree COB grower here. Thanks to this forum and a special thanks to Stephenj37826 for walking me through this build.
I've been using a Platinum P600 LED for my first 3 grows and have been very happy with the results. That said, my biggest mistake was finding this forum and reading about this COB technology and you folks building a modular grow light that can be serviced on-sight (that in it's self makes too much sense). Now I'm about $600 lighter.
Anyway, my biggest weakness is I know nothing about LED's so I bought a cheap 800 watt cob light just to take it apart and see just how it works and having a visual helped me to understand a little about how it works. Some think I wasted my money but you can't put a price on getting an education. I'll replace the COB's once I decide what I want (probably a veg light).
Now that I've had the new light fired up the girls are really like it (vegged under a cfl)
but the proof will be in the final product.
The lights pulling 315 watts at the wall and the light coverage looks good. The heat sink (12" X 40") is doing a great job but I added a clip on fan at one end to take the hs temp way down. I'm using Kapton tape at this time to secure the cobs and wiring and have not decided if I will tape the hs. Power supply is the MW HLG320H-36A wired in parallel, grow footprint is 3'X5' and I'm running the light without lenses at this time, looking at the coverage I may not add the lenses. I'll have to see how things progress and I'll post updates.
I let the girls veg way too long so the canopy will be uneven. Right now that light is 18" off the main canopy and about 12" above the monster cola's. Do you guys and gals have a recommendation distance off the canopy?
This forum is awesome and you guys and gals make it so...
