Yellowing Leaves

I have a Trainwreck Clone outdoors that is in a 7 gallon pot and about 6 ft tall, and the leaves are starting to really get yellow due to a lack of nitrogen I think. But here is my problem I can add more nitrogen but why does the buds on the top of the plants stretch and the lower buds not? If I add more nitrogen to prevent the yellowing wouldnt I encourage the plant to stretch more? The plant has been flowering for 23 days now and I know its to early for the leaves to yellow but adding more nitrogen would only increase the stretching. What is the best way to prevent the plant from yellowing and stretching?
