Kids need loving parents, their genders aren't really important IMO.
I can see how using males could have a benefit if there are a number of desirable traits that are sex linked because males are automatically true breeding for those traits in their female offspring as they only have the one set of female traits to pass on.
My recent harvests are nearly dried. I have a little over 90g from the lowers on the Blue Dream that were left to go for a little longer and it should only lose a few more grams so all together I got about 4.5oz from the plant. I have 200g of buds from the Royal Dog that will probably lose another 20-25% so it's looking like it should be ~150-160g dry. WAY more than I expected. 11 oz from 4 sq ft in 12 weeks is pretty damned good if I do say so myself.

In my quest to get a new mom plant (my last one was getting too big for it's environment), I started fresh from bag seeds. First attempt was in coco/perlite Solo cup hempy buckets. That did not work out too well. There may have been a couple mitigating factors, I may have put them under the light too soon, I over-watered, etc. I'll be honest, I didn't like the coco this time around, maybe it was a bad batch. So this time I started my seeds in Jiffy pots, and have recently put them in Solo hempy buckets. This time it is a straight perlite/ vermiculite mix (3:1). So far they have responded much better. For this grow I'm going to stick to a straight perlite/vermiculite mix, no coco. At this point I have just put them directly under the light after a couple days in indirect light.

I'll keep everyone up to date as it is going along. bongsmilie

Got a little "Bublelicios" mother plant about 7 days old and when I watered it today, I redirecting my little $9 Walmart fan on it (makes a sturdy stem). I somehow got the airflow just right so that the parabolic reflector on the CFL started swinging in a 1-foot arc while I was away. I came back in way later and saw it swinging over the plant at that perfect rate a hypnotist would use. So...I bent over and said "you are growing...., you are growing....., do not stop growing till you are 3-feet tall....make colas....big colas...of juicy bubblegum flavored goodness that are 24inches long.....". LOL, so the secret is out, now you know how I make those big bong-rockin colas happen. You got to hypnotize them...

Nice Dude..i got just under 4 oz off my BD but i let it go about a week too long...67 days and while its still potentnand its not swag...itsjust missing that bouquet that BD has at 9 weeks and before. I would have gladly gotten 15 grams less and tastier smoke..oh well lesson learned...However the Skunk 1 that i let go 69 days i just cut off the vine and its really dank and id say tastes better (already) than the 8-9 week of the same stuff.

And yeah your idea of sex reversal on a female for pollen is definitely isually more useful but i really want to isolate that BOMB parentage as it seems to be desirable enough that Bomb seeds uses it in everything they sell.

I haven't sampled the flowers yet so I can't be certain but I kiefed the trim yesterday and I was satisfied with the results. I mixed some in with my morning bowl from the initial harvest and I'm feeling quite good. I'll try a bowl of the second harvest alone tomorrow morning to see but I'm pretty confident that this will work just fine though I will at least take some of the plant a little earlier or an occasional plant earlier for morning smoke.

As far as isolating a good parent it makes sense to do the work to get a male if you're using male plants because it is so much harder to test males so once you've found a good one you have him knock up every good female you come across. There's no reason that you can't do the same work to breed a mother plant and then use her as a father in fem crosses. That's my plan anyway.

Hello all, thought I'd give an update on my fresh-start hempy grow. Of all the seeds I germinated (16), I ended up with 8 sprouts. My goal is to get down to six, clone them, set them to flower and see who comes up f/m. This was a bag seed grow so it is a crap shoot.

This morning I had a bit of a set back with one, so I thought. I accidentally knocked it over while rotating them. Checked it this afternoon and it seems OK. Hopefully I didn't just shock it into a hermie!!

All the rest look fine. I have noticed using Jiffy peat pellets you have to be careful not to over-water early on. Those pellets hold way more water than the perlite/vermiculite mix, so you can over-water easily. Once the roots take off and grow outside the pellet, this won't be so much of a problem since I can water around it and keep it relatively dry.

The plan is to transplant the best six into 2.5 gallon hempy buckets with a perlite/vermiculite mix (3:1), let them veg for an additional week, then set them to flower. I'll keep everyone up to date as things progress!! bongsmilie

Sounds good, i have mine germinating also as we speak, good luck on the grow!
Plant them in Jiffy pellets then put them into Solo cup hempy buckets once they sprout. Keep them out of direct light for the first day or so, then put them under 18/6. Make sure you don't over-water, which is easy with the Jiffy pellets early-on.

Good luck FJG! bongsmilie

Yes, and that should have said cull but I was on my phone and it got autocorrected. I need the growers version. And the chemists version.

Well basically I like to take clones when the plant is in veg state, not flower. I know some people take them at flower and have had some sort of success, but I have almost 100% success when I take them at veg. Since I am not sure what plants are female, I'll label each cutting, and once the main plants start showing their sex I'll destroy all the male plants and clones. My whole quest here is to get a new mom, so I'm basically starting from scratch. I'm going by the old theory that you'll get about a 50/50 proportion of male to female, so I hope to end up with at least three females. From them I can ultimately decide which type I want to be my mom plant based on yield. I usually take 2 or 3 cuttings when I clone, so I'll have enough of each where I can make a mom out of one and flower the rest.

I should add that I take my clones when the plant has at least three nodes, usually when it's around 8 to 12 inches. I set them to flower not long after taking clones, usually within a few days because I want them finishing around 3 ft or so. Since MJ plants can double or even triple its size during flowering, I don't need them to get too big during veg stage. I'll also fim them once the first node fully appears so I end up with 4 branches per plant.
I hope this makes sense! bongsmilie

That makes perfect sense. I too grow short plants in veg because my space is extremely limited. I like to top and LST them a lot to get multiple short even colas so they yield well in my space. Whenever I start regular seeds I wait for them to get big enough to clone and take the top as a clone to sex and get a sample if the plant is female while the original plant continues to veg if it's a female. With femmed seeds I flower them young and take a lower branch a week or so into flower. I usually have plenty that I cut off when I flower like that anyway. Until they actually start to form floral clusters cloning a stretching plant is pretty much teh same as cloning a vegging plant. Once they have flowers you get that crazy monster cropping action going on. I find the stems aren't strong enough that way so I prefer not to do it.
