Working With Consultant/Grower, Can You Please Tell Me What You Think Of This Advice?

24 plants is a massive undertaking and could be an expensive way to learn from the mistakes that are sure to happen on a first grow. I might consider starting smaller, going through an entire cycle, and then decide what you want to do in terms of going bigger. Vegetative stages are pretty smooth; it’s mid to late flowering that gets challenging, at least in my somewhat limited experience. Try a few small grows with different methods to see your preference. I would gamble that most hobbiest/connoisseurs will argue that organic produces the best herb. The best is not the goal of commercial growers typically, but rather speed/efficiency. With that size space, are you considering commercial uses?

I will be growing along with a partner, and I recently purchased a home with a 30x40 pole barn that i will be remodeling into a grow. This is our first grow, so we will be sectioning it off and only doing 24 plants maximum at first. As my partner and I hone our skills in and get a couple grows under our belts, we plan on sectioning off the barn into different zones and filling it with plants.

I have a couple of guys who work for a corporate weed grow helping me plan it out for free since they work for our family friends; I am a connoisseur and absolutely love cannabis, and am willing to put in the love/work required to get the best quality, while the consultants are more of the types who want to have a more set-and-forget grow that will allow them to go on vacations and such.

My question is, what are your guys thoughts on their advice:

1. I have always planned on hand watering, however they are mentioning a Bluemat watering system to "keep the soil at an optimal moisture at all times". I have always been told that the soil dry backs are a good thing, and that you dont want your soil completely wet all the time. Ive even seen people mention watering every couple of days

2. They recommended Build-A-Soil 3.0, however I have been planning on using Roots Organic Soil. They much prefer coco/salt nutes, but since i am adamant about organic, they recommend BAS 3.0.

3. They Recommended Sliding/Rolling Tables For Flower.

4. They Recommended tiered racking for veg. Would you guys personally do this in a 30x40 pole barn with fairly high ceilings? Or would you do somthing else like just build 1 large veg room, multiple veg rooms, etc?

5. Like i mentioned in number 2 they prefer coco, and are trying to convince me organic is more likely to grow poor quality flower than coco, dont think i should top dress, and think i should take a more synthetic approach. My plan that i originally told them is below
  • --I have been planning on keeping it simple for my first grow based on my research: Dont feed during seed/clone. Feed only Compost Tea and Buddha Grow once or twice a week during first 2 weeks of Veg. Then begin top dressing with Roots Terp Tea Grow every 2 weeks. Flip to flower, and top dress with Roots Terp Tea Bloom once a week, and feed buddha bloom along with compost tea once or twice a week.
Im sorry this was a long post. I just know that there are some very knowledgable people on here, and i want to make sure this grow is being built with love and connoisseur quality in mind. I dont mind avoiding vacations and having "less of a life" as they put it, if it means that more hands on, hand watering/unautomated growing = better quality flower.

Thanks!
The only ship that doesn't sail is a Partnership! Imo I wouldn't partner up. As for the organics can do an Earthbox/SIP container grow. Congratulations on your purchase of the house!

So you think even for 2 people 24 plants is way too much? In my state you're allowed to grow 12 per person unless you get a license, and have seen a lot of 1 man tent grows with 12 plants, so i figured it was to consider 24 plants for 2 people.

If its really that massive of a plant count for 2 people i definitely may consider reducing my size for the first few grows.

And yea thats what confused me. I consider myself a connoisseur, and some of the best flower ive ever had in my life was properly grown organic. My friend agrees. Thats why when the "consultants" told me organic has been some of the worst weed he's ever smoked, i was speechless.

In the far future when our skills are more honed in and we want to start increasing our plant count, we do want to start selling some of the product. I already talked to the city about getting a license and all of that to make sure it was do-able. I also have a friend that owns one of the biggest dispensery chains in the state that said he'd buy my flower, so that shouldnt be an issue.

I appreciate the help! I am definitely going to have to conside reducing the 24 plants considering how massive you think it is.

Trust me, youre preaching to the choir on that one! Im closer to this guy than anyone and weve both got real love for each other like family, so im not worried about that in the slightest. Most of the time you are right though, partnerships can be the worst.

Someone else mentioned SIP's too so im definitely going to have to look into that. They mentioned homemade ones are better. Would you agree, or is there a brand youd recommend?

And thank you so much for congratulating me on the house! Im beyond excited.

Take care, and thank you so much for the reply!

The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. You two have been buddies since childhood, it's not a partnership in business. It's an adventure with your best friend.

24 plants isn't crazy. Me and my mangled old buddy that can barely walk from multiple accidents cared for 64 plants + clones and mothers. If you set it up like a production line, it's a breeze. Hardest part is trim jail. Took me 2 weeks to clean 6 pounds of outdoor this year.

Great! I figure that method of growing would work best for your needs as you described. Me personally have not done a SIP container. Might try one day. I do agree on gathering info on the subject and diy the container. Sounds really feasible! I diy myself like my own bubble cloners, grow spaces and whatever else my stoner ingenuity mind can come up with.
I grow with coco, worm castings, and dry amendments. Definitely do grow some decent pot :weed:

I haven’t grown on that scale though it’s clearly doable. There will be times during the grow when that many plants will keep you really busy. Harvesting will take days and you’ll need friends to help. I’m suggesting starting smaller so that you learn the stuff over a couple grows that will help make a larger grow more efficient. Things will go wrong - count on it. Learn from the mistakes on a small scale so that you don’t make them on a large scale. If your goal is simply keeping you and your buddy stoned, you can scale things way down to start.

I had them growing like a conveyor belt when doing a lot of plants. Whack 8 on week 10, then cycle everything one spot foward, bring the next 8 veg plants into the bloom room, take 8-10 clones, plant rooted clones in cups, up pot cups to 1gal, up pot 1 gal to 5 gal, defol week 3 in flower, clean up, then 8 plant trim jail.

If you do 24 at a rip, you are cleaning 24 plants at a rip. That's a lot of snips. Takes me 3 or 4 hours to clean 2 sips in a 4x4. It will take you a week to do 24 plants. Then you have to worry about everything drying out too much before it goes in the jar. Weed is awesome. If it's not cured and dried properly, it's way less awesome.

Yo homie, welcome. Sounds like a fun undertaking. I've seen a lot of good advice so far from others here.
1. I have used Bluemat before for a similar size grow, but I stopped using them after 1 round. I just found them finicky and they never seemed to give me the even moisture level I wanted. If your using R/O water, which id recommend, you'll need 1ml/gal cal-mag in the water which i didn't like leaving in the reservoir for the gravity feed. I prefer to soak them with a little runoff then allow them to dry back to like a damp sponge or the moisture level of soil when you open a fresh bag. After transplants, I let dry back just a little more to encourage root growth.

2. Build a soil is good stuff, but it will need bottle feeds starting 2-4 weeks after transplanting into it, depending on pot size, if you really want to crush it. Roots is the same. I prefer to amend the roots organic pretty heavy for a water only grow, or medium amendments and boost with bottles. You can use roots or the 3.0 right out the bag for veg, but plants eat a lot in flowering and will need way more then whats in those bags. For a first grow, i'd add some medium amendments to the roots and use botanicare for the bottle boosts. When you transplant to your final pot size, 2-3 weeks before flowering, add these ingredients to each bag of soil and mix well; 1 quart of worm castings, handful of bu's blend compost, 2 Tbls Fish bone meal, 1 Tbls Fish Meal, 1/3 cup Jamaican bat quano, & Mykos, 1/4 cup budswell (yellow) 2 Tbls oyster shell, and 1 Tbls Dolmitic Lime. Water with R/O water and 1ml cal-mag until you see some signs they are hungry, then start at 50% strength using the pure blend pro SOIL sechedule, id add 1ml/gal vitamino, trinity and some liquid budswell to that as well. Feed with every other watering. Each grow you can add more amendments or use more bottles, but its a good jumping off point.

3. Tables are expensive, if you can afford it do it, they are nice. But, definitely not necessary especially for soil where a simple riser and saucer can be used to catch the small amounts of runoff. That said, you don't want your plants sitting on cold floor. If you over water a bit and they sit soggy and cold, you will see issues.

4. Tiered racking for veg is dope, but if you have the space for one level, do that. I have grown in tiered veg, I have pictures on here of when i did it. Pain in the ass to water the top tier, lol, only complaint.

5. Organic will give you the best quality for sure, but a slightly lower yield in most cases. When you get dialed in with some good soil though you can rival coco, especially if your boosting with bottles. Someone who is dialed in with their coco really well, will most likey out yield every time, but smoke is more harsh and less complex terp profile, in my opinion. Many people with disagree with this and im not doggin on them. I grew in coco for 10 years and found that treating it like soil and feeding it like soil gave me the best results. Then I was like, why not just use soil, lol. Never looked back since.
Honestly, I wouldn't mess with compost teas and fully organic nutrients right off the bat, its just harder to get right as you are relying on the micorbes in the soil to break down those orangic liquids to feed the plants, where as organic based bottles like botanicare give you some immediately available food as well. That being said, if you are really passionate about it, go for it. Like I said above, I'd start with a medium amended roots with botanicare bottles and the premixed budswell compost tea. Get some success under your belt, then start doing some side by sides with different mixes or bottles.
And even if you don't think so, you do want to be able to be away from plants for 3-4 days at a time, just in case. I love big beds of soil, you water once a week and the plants go insane. You have to be very careful with overwatering though, especially when plants are small. But even if you just transplant a medium size plant from a 2gal pot into a 15gal pot for flower, you'll get 3-4 days between waters until week 5 flower when it might only be 1-2 days in between. Hope that helps, good luck!

Is there a specific material youd recommend using to cover over the dirt to keep fungus/gnats at bay? Would i just put a layer of hydrated coco on top of the soil?

And that sounds like a very simple method. I am going to bring this up to my friend and seriously consider it. Maybe we'll try it at least on a few plants and see how it works.

And oh thats awesome, not needing to flush is a huge pro to organic that i wasnt even aware of. I cant believe i havent heard that before.

And you're killing me talking about that gorilla zkittlez. My absolute favorite terp is properly grown zkittlez (and some proper OG), and its been wayyyyy too long since ive had some. Ill have to check out the journal. Ive never had gorilla zkittlez, but that Z candy terp is unmatched. I envy you haha, i wish i had some of that to smoke right now.

And lmao that story is amazing. Your homie wasnt ready for some real deal flower hahaha. He must be used to smoking mids and was floored. And thats exactly what im saying. My goal is to bring back real deal fire like back in the day. I can only imagine how good that felt to hear. Hopefully i have the same told to me someday haha.

Thanks again for the help man! It always amazes me how much knowledge you guys have on this forum
Use Gnatrol at 1TBLS per gallon when you transplant into new soil. This stuff is magic for fungus gnats. Use that amount for every watering for the first 1-2 weeks, then back off to 1/4 tsp/gal every few waters as a preventative. You need to kill the larve or you'll never stop them.

I just use the cover that came with the tote. Cut 2 holes in the top. One for a fill pipe and one for the plant. Small 1/2 hole in the tote for drainage just below the medium. The lid snaps right on, if you got your mix right, you won't have to take it off until you're mixing dirt again. Dry amendments are also super cheap. I bought a 50lb bag of the 3-9-4 and 25lb bag of 4-4-4 for $70. That was 2 years ago. Still half full, and I use it outside all summer too. Other amendments I suggested are $10 a box for 3lbs. I still have all those, half full as well.

If you are close to ny that can be arranged. If not, I can send you some edibles. Don't think flower would make it through the mail. Maybe. I'm willing to try, since it's your favorite
That sounds like a great system. Im going to have to at least experiment with building some SIPS for my plants to see how they work.

And thats insane how cheap it is, definitely wayyyy cheaper than buying gallons of liquid nutrients thats for sure lol.

Im not in new york otherwise id hop in the car and start heading your way right now lmao And i seriously cant express how much i appreciate that offer, having some real deal zkittlez terps would be like a breath of fresh air. Edibles, especially gummies, mess my stomach up for some reason
And shipping weed in the mail... well.. thats a discussion for off the forums haha

Seriously cant thank you enough man.

I grow with coco, worm castings, and dry amendments. Definitely do grow some decent pot :weed:
Easy build, easy set up, easy grow. I used a 17gal cheap project source tote, think they were on sale for $9. 10'
stick of perforated drain pipe was $12.
Fabric drain sock for end caps, enough for 2 sips with i pack. $7
10'stick of 1 1/4 pvc, enough for 8 sips $12
10'stick of 1/2 pvc, enough for 8 sips $4
1/2" Rubber grommet for the drain $2

$48 total, not bad. Each one has been through probably 9 or 10 runs. I have 8 in 2 4x8's. Every plant looks prettier in a sip with a little pvc net attached to it. 17gal was the perfect size. Smaller ones I had to take the top off and topdress. Bigger ones are a waste of amendments, plus what the plant doesn't use in the bigger one gets mixed back into your new mix. Around grow 4 it all goes to he'll via a catapult.

Just my experience, but I tried 5 different designes with 7 different strains all from clone. All 7 strains ran through each design twice. This one needs 0 maintenance aside from water, a trim of the lowers before flower, and a defol after week 3. Just set it, drag it to the bloom tent, and forget it. Went on vacation this summer for 12 days. My buddy came once and filled them up. If it was soil in pots he'd be here every other day. Sorry for rambling, the gorilla zkittles gets me chatty

And that definitely gives me more confidence on sticking with the 24 plants. I didnt think it sounded crazy either, but people are making me doubt myself haha. If you and a "mangled old buddy" can do it, i think i might stick with the 24.

Thats not bad at all. And especially if you have higher plant counts, that seems like a very easy set and forget system.

lmao at " it all goes to hell via a catapult"

And that sounds almost like the system i used for growing mushrooms. as long as you got the moisture perfectly right, and the airflow correct, you could close the tote, leave for a couple weeks, and come back to a beautiful harvest of mushrooms.

And dont worry about it, id rather you ramble and keep giving knowledge. im quite high and rambly myself haha. All of the help is beyond appreciated

Go for it! Try 6 in 4 different set ups. Definitely grab a tent and a set up, get started learning while the barn is being converted. No time like the present. You'll be able to use the lights in the barn anyways. Who couldn't use an extra fan or two?

Thats not a bad idea. Then by the time the barn is built ill have a way better idea of what system i prefer. I have a whole extra bedroom in the house, so i could definitely make it happen. This is something im seriously going to consider.

id recommend buying a small 4x8 tent and fill half of it with plants and hang all the weed when its done in the unused half. itll give you a chance to
-choose decent lighting that can scale up
-find a strain you like before growing lots of it
-get a feel for the hobby first
-get a feel for trimming, drying and curing properly depending on the climate where you grow

even if your a couple guys with alot of cash and free time on your hands it would still be a bit of a shame wasting cash without being absolutely sure about all the nitty gritty details. also if you decide to not take my advice which is fine too. at least do this. if your building a room in the barn build a room infront of the room where you can change your shoes and clothes before entering the actual room in the barn where you plan to grow so as not to track pests into the grow room from outside the barn.

Do you think at least remodeling the barn so it is insulated and climate controlled, and then just running a tent in it would be the best option? Or would you just leave the barn how it is for now, run the tent inside your house, and then worry about a barn later? The barn is such a perfect space id love so start putting it to use. I could even have small veg and flower rooms built in it for now with their own climate controlled zones instead of tents if you think thatd be the best option.

I honestly still think i am going to seal off my pole barn and section off just a couple zones for veg/flower and just start with a small 24 max plant grow rather than a tent, but i am very curious to hear your opinion as my mind is still open for changes.

And oh yea ive already got that planned. as soon as you step into the barn it will be a sealed off clean room where you must change shoes, clothes, etc, before you can even enter the main grow area.

Thank you so much for the help!

well i started in a closet many years ago reading the old overgrow forums (not the new ones the old one that had the server taken down by the police or whatever there called in the states), then another closet, then a small room, then a small room with a tent inside it, then i finally built a room that was climate controlled with co2 enrichment. i didnt bother spending the cash building a nice room until i really knew id able to grow quality medicine on my own. save your cash for now. if you want to go bigger later like everyone else said you just fold the tent into a box and move all your lights and fans to the larger room when you feel you have the confidence. it better to burn $1500 dollars on a nice light and a tent if it doesnt work out than burn 12,000 - 15,000 dollars on a climate controlled room if it doesnt work out
