Will these lights work?

My dad came across three of these, they say 1000w on them, light is bright as fuck can't look at it directly. If I bought some bulbs would they be good for blooming?

it is a 1000w metal halide light. it looks to be an exterior light with built in ballast with ability to use all voltages. it will be hot and will not be able to air cool but it would work, mh is ok in flower but hps is much better. and make sure when dealing with mh bulbs and how you mount the light because some bulbs will only work horizontally or vertically and some can do either.
 
Yes sir they will work...if they are MH buy u a couple conversion bulbs (hps) and u will be ready to start growing. It's what I use and they do the job. If u get on YouTube there is a video on how to detach the bulbs from thr ballast. That way u don't have to hang up a 35 lb light. The ballast put off a lot of heat also so thay will help with that.
 
Those fixtures usually work very well and last a very long time, I picked up a 250W HPS one similar to it for $20 on Craigslist and converted it to a remote ballast like smokerja was referring to, that way you can put the ballast outside your grow area as 1000W ballasts can get pretty warm, even hot, here's the video he was referring to about how to make it remote: (-->CLICK HERE<--) For vegging MH is great but for flowering I would heed smokerja advice and use a HPS conversion bulb (HPS bulb that runs on MH ballast), I don't know which is best but there are many to choose from: (-->CLICK HERE<--)

Pretty much any 1000W "horticulture" bulb is going to be pretty pricy, I'm not sure how it works with conversion bulbs but you can get standard 1000W HPS bulbs for commercial, warehouse & security lighting purposes for a lot cheaper but they don't have "enhanced spectrums" for growing, however Ive heard that standard HPS bulbs work dam near just as good as "enhanced spectrum" horticulture bulbs, not sure how factual that is but its what Ive heard.
 
Nice find on the 1000w mh mag ballasts..........yeah remote them ^^^like everyone said......1000w mh will gives better quality nugs at a small yield loss compared to HPS, If growing for profit then yes HPS is the way to go, for personal use I have no problem recommending MH throughout.....problem is most MH bulbs aren't open fixture rated (like yours)..so if it fails catastrophically/ big problem....try to find an open fixture rated MH bulb

Funny, I was going to mention that bulb but I thought they weren't available yet, obviously I was wrong:
(cheapest price I found--> (-->CLICK HERE<--) PSUAGRO is absolutely correct, not only is it perfect for your ballast/fixture, its arguably the best horticulture bulb on the market, the spectrum is practically unmatched, however Ive heard the 400W Philips Mastercolor retro white CMH lamps produce the fullest spectrum. The only real problem with the 830W CDM bulb is that its vertical burn only, however that's the exact type of fixture the OP has, you'll want to get a reflector dome but that won't be hard, I actually have one that came with my 250W HPS fixture that you can have if you want, I'm sure it will fit your fixture, however if your not in California shipping might be a few bucks, let me know if your interested.
 
That bulb isn't to bad of a price, I just glanced over some and I saw upwards of 150$ each. I'll probably end up getting 3 of those then, worrying about heat is going to be new since I've only grew with florescent lights so far.

No problem running vert my friends, I always prefer it......stick it with an OG vert reflector(best on the market)......best bulb+ best reflector= best indoor light source PERIOD...

Edit: I own the 205w and 330w allstart energy advantage bulbs(their better than the hps ver "mastercolor")......nothing beats the quality that is grown under these IMO.....I don't expect the 830w to be any different...
 
I see it now, must have over looked it lol, 16,000 hours doesn't sound to bad. I think I might go with that bulb and hood, go all out.

I bought two of these but they were 400 watts. I simply rewired remote and left the enclosure open. They run hot and they are too heavy to hang "as is" safely from any wooden joist you blindly screw into. Trust me.
