bak dat up man..however,if i do build a cooltube with a bake a round...which i might..how am i supposed to hook the light in there without having the light bulb leaning and touching the glass..or does it NOT matter if the bulb is leaning and touching the cooltube?and if i do..will a 4 in BOOSTER fan keepp things cool?i know it it was a high end fan like vortex,can fan,etc..it will def move air..but these booster fans SUCK ASS...lol....

Sounds good. If you are blowing air in, where does it exit? How many watts are you cooling?

This is what I would do. He mentioned in his other thread about making the DIY cool tube. The only thing I would caution from experience is often by the time you are done you have spent what you could have bought it used for...try craigslist. If you get the pyrex tube cheap and you are handy do this. I saw the metal clips (forgot there actual use) at wal-mart. The only thing is the pyrex tube is 4" and is a little small IMO for a 400w.

As for the duct booster, while I have not had personal experience, this topic has been discussed alot and the fan is only meant to assist (or boost) a fan which is rated the same as the booster (ie. 256 cfm booster fan). The fan does not push the rated cfm. It is meant for long runs of ducting where there is a loss of force over the length. Again with no personal experience your $25 would be better spent on a large cfm muffin fan (computer type). Not sure who has them cheap but someones got a big one with a cord for about that.

I have had good luck using bath fans from Home Sinkhole for DIY. You could be creative, this is what I do. One is pulling air from big bulb and top of box. This vents to the Existing bathroom fan over the shower (zip tied) which is left on to pull air. The others push in fresh air to the flower box which is rarely left closed but only runs 11 degrees above ambient if closed. Exhaust is 265cfm blower through removed light fixture into attic. Carbon impregnated prefilter pad for air cleaner (Hdepot again) has been put over the intake in flower box which pulls heat off top to girls and through air cooled hood and out.

thnkz man..i have a 400 w hps ..same exact light as yours...my whole problem is cost..i need a way to cool my small closet,without spending alot of money,or making things to complicated..i want to make the diy cooltube,but that only thing thats confusing me is how to keep the light from not laying on the glass...other than that..i might just use the duct booster to suck the hot air from the bulb...im so confused on which method i should use..

i woudl prefer to not use a aircooled refletor in order to keep things simply..and just use a fan and ducting to pull the hot air near the bulb...and direct the hot air to either the other side of the closet which is seperated by tons of clothes..or just direct the air to a sealed box or cooler....

my whole problem is whether the cheap 6 in duct booster fan actaully MOVE air at all...my ducting will only be around 3-5 feet long,and it will be straight....im very close to buying it..and rember,this will be only a temp fix...in the future when i get money,i will go all out with a nice vortex,dwc system,etc....this is just to get my feet wet and FINALLY produce my own quality homegrown after years of reading...

it was exiting through the exhaust in the upper level of the closet pointed back towards the door.it would rise,recycle&cool before getting sucked back into the closet.400 hps.now running in a 3x2x5 tent

a pyrex bake a round tube,4 in flexible ducting,and a cheap 4in duct booster fan....ill just use my htg supply lamp cord,but my problem is how to suspend the lgiht bulb in the cooltube,so it doesnt just lay on the glass....

The DIY cool tube uses some brass hardware to keep socket in the center of the bake around. I do not remember what the actual purpose of the brass was but I did see it at walmart in the clothes hamper and clothes line section.

I am pretty sure the booster is not what your need. I have seen people use duct work near bulb with no hood, but this would not work as well as the hood. It is going to take money period.

thnkz..but remember this is a temp fix..for just THIS grow,Im only after a clone mother plant from this seed run..and ofcourse a few ounces of homegrown ak48 wouldnt hurt :hump:..then ima upgrade to a vortex fan,cooltube,dwc system,etc for my future grows....all i need is a temp fix for my cooling needs...just one 400 hps in a small closet with a couple plants in there,nothing too fancy,which is why i dont wanna spend a couple hundred just yet..

i know the booster fans SUCK...but will one work to vent the hot air that comes off the hps bulb?Temps wont be as optimal,but as long as they grow properly,and dont die or stress too much due to the heat,im fine with that...so do you HONESTLY think that just having the ducting and a 6 in booster fan from htg supply be enough to keep temps MANAGEABLE?

remember,im broke right now...i spend quite a bit of change on 2 hps lights,the medium,a dwc kit,mylar,etc.....and i mssed the most important part,a cooling system...so now im in the market for the cheapest,yet efftive,solution...

yea they may work.. If they actually send u what u ordered.. then it may only work for a week then die.. i dont reccomend HTG to anyone.. nothing but problems with there stuff .

Will it work...well it will work, but your temps are going to be 20 degrees higher than ambient, in your entire room. If you do not remove the heat from the system you will just be cooling with ever increasingly warmer air. You may as well just use a box fan if you can not remove the heat to another room.

I have only done biz once with them (HTG), but service was quick, I got what I ordered. They were out of the agro-max bulb I ordered so they shipped with a standard bulb, and the upgrade followed in a couple of days. No complaints.

what defects have you had with their products...i have 2 of there 400 hps lights,2 timers,and my t5 light is theres too...i hope i have better luck than you...reshiiping broekn shit is always such a hassle..

so..who else has any inoput on these duct booster fans...do they actually move SOME air?i plan on having the duct opening extremely near the hps bulb..sucking the hot air that collects there..will this keep temps manageble in my closet?

BTW...The copyright on your Bio text is 2006. Who keeps High School textbooks after High School...Only those who drop out. The school will not issue a diploma, or mail out transcripts if you change schools (to anybody) until the books are returned and all fines paid. (I work in the Registrar/Counseling office when I have free time)

I am not trying to give you a hard time, but minors on this site jeopardize RIU. Do your folks support your hobby? If not, what happens if they find out, and without money to cool your lights, you do not have money to deal with the smell or the sound, much less pay the bill for electricity, and again they WILL notice the increase.

Unless you graduated last year and took Freshman Biology as a junior (textbooks arrived in spring semester of the 05/06 school year) senior, I am fairly certain you are under age. At my school there are ZERO juniors or seniors out of 2500 students taking this class.

Also as a Biologist, it is somewhat sad that the book appears to never have been opened and has been demoted to the level of a brick to have water spilled on and pages warped:-(.

I have been using the 6" duct fan for a few months now and it has helped me. Even though they say they are rated at 250 cfm, they actually run at a little more than 160 free air cfm. Meaning that since there is no help from your furnace which blows air and lets the fanwork at it's maximum, it will work by itself at moving about 160 cfm. The way to figure out if it will work for is to get the square footage of your closet (let's say 3X4X8 feet high=96sqft), take that number and divide it by 5 (because usually you want to be able to exchange the air within 5 minutes), and the number you end up with is the lowest cfm rating you should go with. So if it was 96sqft divided by 5 you would get 19.2 sq ft per minute. So a 6" fan will probably do the trick for you if you set it up properly. But the others are right, you definitely want to vent the air out of the closet.
