Will curing develop terps in weed that smells crap after drying?

Do terps improve with curing?

  • Yes terps do develop with curing, its worth waiting even if it smells crap after drying

  • No, If it doesn't smell good after drying it's low quality curing isn't going to change that.

Long story short I've recently harvested it's dry enough now to smell/taste it.

Out of the 6 plants harvested there's 2 i like, straight off they're stinky.

The others i think smell crap/not very much, i don't anticipate it getting better with curing?

That said there's people who's opinion i respect reckon curing can make this crap/nothing smelling weed decent?

Obviously I'm stuck with it and time will tell but I was wondering what your experience has been in my situation.

Edit... Dried at 14/16c 58/62% 11 days today.

Get grove bags....dry out your buds better before you put them in the groves...

Because you can screw that up too. Too wet in a grove will cause that rancid amonia wet leaf smell too.

Hang a plant a full week before you think about jarring it...2 might be better if your conditions are damp (winter in Canada ...1 week is right on the money)

I'm not sure if any bud actually improves with curing. I find that during storage terpenes will fade at different rates, which can drastically change the flavor of the bud, for good or for bad. I have some really nice Sour D that went from tasting like good Sour D to tasting like mothballs. I have another one that lost some weird tasting element, and 6 months later it tastes pretty decent. I guess you could call that an improvement, but it all comes down to the individual strain. My best tasting crop ever took about 2 weeks to dry (as low/slow as I could, 55% room RH) then went straight into grovebags at 55%, which is lower than a lot of people like to have their buds when they jar up. I just experiment with a small part of my crop each cycle to see what turns out good.

I realized I like to go with dryer bud when I ran out of jars (pre-grove bag) and just stuck a bunch of dried buds into a ziplock freezer bag and stored it in the dark at room temp-those ziplock buds tasted so much better than the exact same strain that I had painstakingly kept at 58-60% in Jars, and burped and all the rest. No comparison at all, the ziplock buds tasted like pure fresh strawberry and the jar buds tasted like generic mildly fruity skunk. Later this year I'm goin to grow some Mulanje Gold and do a proper Cob job on them to see what some real fermentation does to buds!

Thanks everyone.
It's been drying 11 days now at 58/62% 14-16c it's still hanging but dry enough to smell/taste.

Some of It smells crap today!

Are we agreed no amount of curing is going to change it?

Dried properly weed is good as soon as it's dry. No need to cure. If you like old weed then by all means stick in jars or bags and lose out on the fresh terpenes.
Id say it depends bud some things like hazes store better for longer and improve things that are more indica n hybrid like say chems tend to be better fresher it really comes down to what terps are dominant in the weed tho if its high in sesquiterpenes it will hold it longer and stay better stuff high in monoterpenes lose it real fast and are better fresher

I did have some stored for over a year and still didn't like it.

I intended to make a slab of hash with it before realizing it's fkn jailbait and dumped it.

you didn't have a sometimes options. i have dried bud and it was perfect/best the moment out of the dry tent. i have had many others that needed to coddled in a jar to get a decent smell. had others that smelled great, but after being in the jar and hte temp rising starting not smelling so great..

i have also had trouble with curing chem type terps. i can't tell if the smell is good or bad sometimes. i had one that smelled like dogshit (after 3 months cure it does not now)...i thought it was pretty cool, but not anyone else around me.

If your bud is already dried, you can't cure it. Curing is in essence slow drying, once all the moisture is gone, the buds are finished.

My experience with this I actually found very weird. I have had a hand full of times where after drying and a 14 day cure the bud was mostly flavorless and unappealing. I usually use that for edibles as it often does the job but doesn't hit the taste boxes. That being said I did do a 1, 3, 6 month taste test splitting up some bud from the same strains across a few jars and although it wasn't like night and day kind of difference the 3 and 6 month cures did develop better flavor than fresh dried or 14 day cure.

Will it work for your strain, no idea but I would say to anyone curious, test it, set yourself some do not open until "X" jars of the same strain and see what happens.

I read somewhere a while ago that most cup winning buds are long cured buds (3-6 months) not fresh which is what made me do this test myself.

No I do not do a 3-6 month cure myself currently, I dry and jar but begin use right from there. I still believe the buds are curing in the jars as I am only opening them once a day or not at all depending how many strain I have at that time to fill my grinders.

brownies??
That would've been nice but it posed to much of a risk, imagine how damn stupid you'd feel getting done for weed you wouldn't smoke, i don't really smoke hash but it was a use for it, when I thought about the sentence circa 4-5lb would carry i decided i should chuck it.

Plus there's a crop growing behind it and another circa 400g of my favorite smoke.

I never thought I'd see the day that i dumped weed but there you are, never say never.
