Wierd bugs... hmmm

I noticed that in my flowering room some of the plants had been a meal for some sort of critter. After close inspection I realized that what ever it was is only eating the top of the leaves and scraping away a fine layer of green, thus leaving tiny spots like a checker board. I have had mites in the past and these bugs are certainly not a mite or Gnat.

Under a Magnifying glass they look like tiny grains of white rice, some with a tiny brownish spot in the center of them. They move like an inch worm and when bothered they can leap, similar to a flea or lice. I have ruled out Mites, Gnats and Lice, due to fact that I Googled all of them and found nothing that looks the same. Even under a magnifier, I cant get a great look, they are really small.

Any Ideas what they are? I sprayed all the plants and the entire room with "Go Gnats" spray. I works wonderful usually.

On a stranger note, they have been eating the AK 47 and White widows but have not touched the Santori plant at all.... Wierd shit.

holy shit, i think you have what I have. What the hell are they? They dont seem to be hurting my plants much. Are you noticing any black spots on leaves (tiny), or shiny spots, like metallic sheen kind of, or reflective like a slug trail? Oh, and check out my thread I posted..

I sure am, I see those tiny microscopic black spots near the area where the little bugs have been. WTF are they???..

You've got me stumped with that small description and no pics. Maybe see if this key helps you http://www.entomology.umn.edu/cues/4015/key/. You may have to collect a sample and watch their lifecycle. If they were larvae, they would eventually develop into an adult so you may want to keep an eye on them.
Fantastic information on the link, thank you + Rep.

I can't tell for sure what they are, but I have a few Ideas. I need to take a closer look under a microscope to see the real details of what they are.. Thanks though.

I'm with you. Thrips, or leafminers. Although, leafminers leave a trail, and today I noticed some bigger ones that looked alot different. Could have been a bigger different bug, but I have a feeling they are one in the same. I just picked up some avatrol which should work. It's well spoken of at the local shop. I've used flouramite (sp?) for mites, and it worked great with one application, and supposedly this stuff is the next best thing. I don't know if flouramite would work though, on these guys. I'll give you a post in a couple days after I apply the azatrol.. Using it tmw morning at 6 a.m. Oh, and have you noticed them jumping at all? Mine are yellow, or white, or a whitish-yellow, and they jump, or crawl across the leaf. I think the black spots are their poop, too...

I hear you. Thrips are the culprid I think. The black spots might be poop or maybe the plants cells are sucked dry of clorophyll and look like that when empty. Who knows. I'm gonna post a new thread now about using a fogger I just bought. I don't know if it's dangerous.

Sounds like Thrips. I had them in my last grow. Nothing too major if you catch them early. Clean and Neem. Clean your grow room real good and mix up a neem oil solution and it will take care of them. Also get some Sticky card fly traps, put them under your plants, after a couple days you will get an idea of how bad they are by how many hit the sticky card, and its easier to ID the different stages of growth when the fuckers are stuck to a sticky card..:lol:

Hey BC. Theres alot of the fuckers, let me tell you. First I thought I had some sort of a Deficiency, with the spotting. I have been upping the Nitro and Micros for some time with no improvment. I didn't even think to look for bugs, as I just got rid of fungus gnats a couple of months ago.

Defiantly sounds like thrips. Their larva are small and have a yellowish-white color to them and leave black and clear spots on the leaves from eating damage. I have had them for 2 grows now. I use a garden-safe spray during veg. to kill most of them, but I'm sure neem oil will work. I hunt them with my fingers too. Im going to try adding the sticky cards =) , I have the hanging ones for flys. So far they have stuck to eating the leaves and havent touched the buds. They also havent caused too much damage to the plants as long as you keep their numbers down. GL

Yeah, I think thats what they are as well. I've purchased some Avitrol EC, an over the counter pesticide available at your local gardening supply store. I applied it this morning after my lights turned off, so Ill tell you how it goes ina few days. I too have also hung sticky cards, and while Ive caught a hell of a lot of fungus gnats, I dont think I see any thrips on there.. Fuckers are small though, and the plants dont seem too damaged at all, in fact, they look pretty damn healthy, but, I dont want to just take that for gtanted, maybe they just havent gotten to big enough numbers yet. Anyway, I will respond back on the pesticide, my next step was going to be some type of predator bug.. Has anyone ever tried plain old rubbing alcohol or soap and water? They are supposed to dry out the insects bodies and kill them by dehydrating them, but it sounds like it may be harmful for the plants (the alcohol more than the soap and water)...

When dealing with thrips dont hang the cards, lay them under your plants, I lay them on the pots and they catch a ton of them. If you are hanging them hang them as close to your plants as possible or the cards dont catch that many thrips.

do you use the yellow or blue cards? Have you noticed a difference between either of them?

I only have yellow, never tried blue. The yellow seem to work fine tho. Maybe buy a pack of each color?

:peace:
I bought a pack of yellow, but I was searching online and the blue ones actually say they are for thrips, as the yellow say aphids and whiteflies.. I have noticed A LOT of fungus gnats, and maybe a couple thrips. I have them hanging but down below the canopy, off the bottom-most branches.

I bought a three pack of raid fumagator foggers and they have a 12% of Permethrin. It says to remove house plants from the room, but I the guy at the store said I don't have to. I used one of them with a couple of test plants in a room last night and there wasn't any problems. It killed all the thrips I saw and I couldn't find any live ones. So then I fogged the entire grow room 4 hours later. I fogged the veg room this morning. This should controll them for a while. If I see them return, I may have to do it again in the weeks to come.

For now I seem to be free of them. I just wouldn't want to smoke this weed for a while.

How far into flowering did you use the fogger??
