I hate to say it but I think it might be the early signs of alzheimer's. I know his mum in the last few years got worse and worse around the 70 mark.
He can still remember how much he paid for a car back when he was 15 down the to cent, and also the price of anything mum has bought or given money to friends over the last 40 years though/
