Looks good! Sounds good. I would and do consider growing a hobby. it's fun because I do it for myself. if it was my only source of income it would be a lot less fun. Just enjoy it is my advice!

You live in most desirable country to Immigrate. Money rules here, while there, the labor force still holds some power.
Your roads are good (cars last longer) Your cars are good. Healthcare, wages, education, low crime.
Australian trends seem to follow the US by about 5 yrs from my observations. If I was you, (forward thinking as you are) I would stay there and position myself for the influx of competition once the laws are relaxed.
But if you do come here, don't bring your b/f.

It's a strange time here for being able to legally grow weed though.
You'd have to work for a Licensed Producer, who are currently doing a kinda shit job when it comes to legally providing patients with medicine. On a good note, since they seem to be sucking hard at growing their websites are often advertising jobs for experienced growers. And THEY really want to see a degree in horticulture.
Depends what your timeline is. This is the way things are now, but potentially in October of 2015 we will vote in a new government who say they want to legalize marijuana across the board and regulate it.
Compassion clubs here obviously have growers and they are definitely the more patient-friendly option for growing as a profession. But they're in a grey area of legality and there would be potential risks.
Or, you could just grow illegally and do what you want with it. Sell it, give it away, whatever.

Thanks yessica, it was a plan , because being Australian born kinda gets me into Canada easier then many other ethnic groups

Only trouble is myself and my partner are studying at the present , she's doing a degree in oral hygiene and I'm doing horticulture / agriculture and botany
Options are limitless but you were right yessica , it will be a long and hard road , with lots of grey areas.
