well, It can surely be done, but it is more complicated then what you think.

  1. 110V AC doesn't mean 110V max amplitude... you would fry them like eggs ;)
    You need to calculate the Veff for 230V it is about 308V if I remember well. just multiply by sqrt(2)/2
  2. Secondly driver are SMPS and have transformators, so they isolate from the main power grid. If you flat out your 110V AC into "110V" DC and put a capp to minimise ripple, be careful not too touch it, you won't be able to take your finger off RIP
  3. With a heavy charge, the ripple will be too big, they will detect harmonic problems on your electric line and think you got a damage device.
  4. Your led will have a oscillating current through them, meaning flickering light => maybe beneficial for plants, I don't know. (could be a good idea to look at frequency impact on vegetal in google scholar :) ) in US you will be at 100Hz and Europe 120hz.

theres alot more going on in a led driver then just changing the current from ac to dc,first of all the ac has way too much amps behind it to just switch it to dc.but like speedyganga said theres the current ripple to deal with which led drivers do.capacitors in the driver store power and feed it to the led in a smooth current,if you ever hooked a volt meter to a wall outlet and watched it for 5 minutes you would see in most cases it varies by as much as 10 volts up and down sometimes more.im curious to see what happens to a cob that has a max rating of 4.2 amps when you apply 4 x the max,im guessing it looks like :fire:
