the "lightning link" does not make an AR 15 fully automatic, it allows "bump fire" which is cause by premature hammer release by disabling the cutoff link with a CAREFULLY machined device which ONLY works on the oldest models, and the possession and manufacture of these objects is a felony.
AR15's cannot become M16's without extensive re-tooling, and installation of DIFFERENT PARTS in the reciever.
i have a .22 pistol which as a result of wear has become "fully automatic" but this is NOT a feature. it too simply "bump fires" just like the "lightning link" equipped rifles do. this means the striker hits the primer BEFORE the round is in battery. this causes wild inaccuracy, and excessive wear on the gun, in addition to being dangerous as fuck.
guns that can "bump fire" are malfunctioning. they can discharge without warning, and deliberately modifying your gun so it malfunction is a felony.
the only way to make an AR 15 fully automatic is by re-tooling the lower receiver to allow the installation of a full auto trigger assembly, or replacing the lower receiver with one that is already so equipped.
a disabled sear and cutoff link does not make a semi automatic firearm fully automatic, this may make it seem so to the regulatory mandarins, but it is not factual.
further, the "lightning link" was a hamfisted workaround, an illegal modification that ultimately reduced effectiveness and accuracy for the forbidden thrill of a few seconds of simulated automatic fire.
the "lightning link" is no longer an option, since the guns it COULD work on have been re-classified as NFA arms, and as a result are prohibited. these days it's all about bump fire stocks and recoil buffers but they still have shit accuracy.

perhaps you might consider that maybe, JUST MAYBE the reason the "lightning link" and dozens of other "legal full auto" devices like it (most of which are now classed as NFA items) are not turning up in crimes is because these arms are not well suited to crime, since they are difficult to conceal, and criminals rarely have the discipline and intelligence to acquire install and use these devices for their crimes. these items are also not used in hunting, or competition because they wreck accuracy. even in machinegun shoot, anyone who shows up with a lightning link, or other such device will be at a serious disadvantage against REAL machine guns.
