Why do HID lights have better penetration?

If I have the choice between a 300 watt LED light and a 300 watt HID light, then why does the HID light penetrate better?

Well, I was generalizing…I know way better than to buy a "bluerple" Chinese-made LED. I already own an Area 51 SGS light. I have grown under MH and HPS in the past, too. It always seems as if the HID lights do penetrate the canopy better. And, I have read comments that mirror the same sentiments.

I have also been reading that the newer LEC lights will produce higher yields than will LEDs.

If there isn't any difference in penetration given watt-for-watt, then it seems that LEDs would have a couple of advantages: Longevity and less heat. But, then…WHY would an LEC light produce higher yields?

The comments mirroring your sentements are based on "blurple" units. That's exactly why people think they have less penetration.

"Rellow" has very good penetration. Ask EH.

The LEC does not produce higher yields. It's completely dependent on light intensity in umol*m^-2*s^-1

I never understood where this idea of penetration came from i used ushio 600 for a long time and if my canopy is tight the bottom always suffered even in vertical the back of the plant struggles and it's like maybe 12" to 16" deep

Gram a watt grows left and right with cobs. Even the first versions were hitting that. Getting better everyday.

Instead of a bulb change for the same light you do a bulb change for a better light, priceless...

DIY only. There is no commercial unit you can get that will beat a gavita. There are only commercial units that come close or are on par with gavita in terms of efficiency.

This is 160lm/W , 49% efficient, 2.4umol/J, and cost me about 450 dollars in parts. (only 192W dissipation, but produces enough light to flower in that 4'x2' tent. I designed it so there's 1 driver for the whole thing.

Your best bet would be to wait for the area 51 vero 29 light in june if you want a plug and play commercial light. Thats the release date from what i understand. I have no idea what it will look or perform like but they have consistently made good lights.

Give it a try and see how you like it. Probably be able to switch chips when you feel like it to whatever the top chip is in the future for what should be guaranteed awesome results. Not that the new vero 29's won't be great as is..

They are expensive though. As church stated, diy helps to make big wattage cob lights possible. Who knows how long before hps and cob tech prices are more closely matched

I think if someone isn't sold on LED they simply shouldn't use it. These LED vs HID threads are all the same.

"LED sucked 5 years ago, so it will always suck" get's really old...
agreed, BUT, the technology is changing so fast, It's hard to give up tried and true for DIY. Most growers want plug and play and at least close to same results with the less cost on power bonus. I keep watching them and hope a good one comes out. Higher price is fine as you'll make it back on energy savings eventually.

I think the biggest share of the savings is with bulb replacements. $50-100+ every 6 months to a year quickly adds up. DIY cobs are estimated to experience almost zero output depreciation. So that savings will keep adding up as long as you own the light. They're much lower maintenance, just dust the heatsink once in a while with a can of air. No more finaggling giant planes of glass out of a awkwardly designed reflector. No more worries that a power surge will cause a bulb to explode... Set it and forget it lighting.

I am personally thrilled by the notion of never having too throw bulbs away.... The material waste in the landfill always bothered me.

While LEDs r getting better so r hids u think they just went fuck it hids r the best they can be fck no they r getting better all the time Iam running version. 3 growlush bulbs and compared to the Chinese shit hid bulb they absolute smash em
