Why are my plant stems purple??

What's up guys I also posted this in the plant problems forum, but I thought I might have better luck here...These plants have been in my system for about a week and were 1.5-2.5 weeks old when I received them. I am using a 600 watt metal halide bulb and have water constantly cycling to each plant from a water pump. This is my first attempt at growing, and I was just curious as to why the stems are turning purple. Does anyone know if this is normal or what causes this? Thanks :eyesmoke:

Purple stems can mean your light is too far away, it gets the color from stretching. But it can also be genetics. What strain are they? How far away is the 600w MH?

Thanks for the replies. The water temp is a little warm if anything, but the nute def is definitely possible. Do you know which ones? Also the light probably is too far. It's about 2 feet away from the tops because I didn't want to burn them, is that too far? And the strain is sour grapes (chemdog x purple elephant x sour diesel), so maybe it is supposed to be purple, but I have never seen what it looks like growing...

the nutes im planning to use is fox farm grow big..how old is your plant??yea i think thats to far your plants mite stretch..just hold you're hand at the top of your plants if it is not too hot after about 30 seconds you're fine but try moving them a little closer
