i was wondering why my buds are light and airy instead of tight and compact and they have a grass type of smell

was it because of the light i used a 400hps

i dont really have much info but the strain is northern lights

usually like when i get bud there hard and compact mine that i grew are kind of fluffy and light and really not that tight

i was thinking that it was because of the light and how close or far away it is

Well, if they are light, fluffy, and airy, I would think you grew a Sativa. But Northern Lights is 80% Indica which doesn't make much sense. It could be because of the lighting or how far the light was from the plant.

Could be a million reasons, lighting, improper diet, bad temps, bad root system, disease, etc. its also possible you just harvested early. ganja really does most of its "filling out" during the last couple weeks. Its not uncommon to get excited and harvest too soon.
The grassy smell is chlorophyll and if you cure your bud it should dissipate after a couple loong weeks.
My recommendation, give the FAQ a real thorough read, know your bud inside and out, learn as much as you can, be patient, watch grow videos, talk to anyone you can who has grown, take all that information, make it work for you and your next grow will turn out amazing.
Good luck and happy growing

Could be a multitude of things, just some kind of stress on the plant, just smoke it and try to improve on your next crop.

how close was your light to the top of the plant? and if done right you can grow about up to six w/ a 400W its all about the setup.

The strain can be genetically deformed.
Alot of shit genetics is sold online.(just tossin that out)
besides how can you be sure you got what you paid for, everything is a con game these days.

Master kush is right on the money about the look of a sativa.
My first gow was with sativas, I really thought I had hermies and ended up cutting early.doh!
The buds were growing tentacles and I freaked out.

I grow northern lightsx skunk1 and it looks amazing before I chop it down. Big nug formation. But when it dries if and even if i do trim well it just looks leafy. And it has absolutely no smell once dry and it take every bit of 3 weeks in a jar to get a decent smell. The yield is awesome but thats about it. I rotate wiith blue cheese and it grows HUGE nuggety buds short and fat and when it dries it looks a million times better and more dense under the same light. but it yields way less. So its not just you...

WHAT?!?!
ive seem grows where people have 4 plants under a 400 watter and yeild about a 5oz..
According to the experts, 50watts per square foot to maximize lighting. That means 8 square feet for 400's. Depending on your method you can easily put 4 plants in that space. If you learn to SOG you could do 8 plants. I am leaning toward that method myself. Due to small vertical space and light wattage.
