No, you can't do away with the acronym LOL. Though I am surprised that you actually admit it is an acronym and not a word in of itself.

Besides, once you start doing away with acronyms where do you stop?

I'm no fan of spelling or grammar nazis, and try to refrain from being one myself. But, as a matter of historical fact, did you realize that one thing that has preceded the collapse of all great civilizations is the bastardization of their native language? I'm not suggesting any direct cause and effect or anything, but it's surely not a complete coincidence either. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the language being bastardized, but rather a lack of focus on education, or an overabundance of tolerance for ignorance. I dunno. Just pointing out the history. (And when I see "Kin I get sum1 to hep me owt wit sum fat budz!!!' or something like that, I confess, I do cringe inwardly and worry about the future of OUR civilization.)
But Bongulator, our language already has been bastardized.

Why are you so staunchly defending your right to look like a complete moron? And, "this.......is.........a.........forum.......where.....people" -- where people what? It really helps when arguing a point if you can finish your sentences.

Failure to understand the differences would be my best guess. Though there is nothing to adequately prevent lol from becoming a word at some point.

Though if people must use lol, one would of course hope that they use it in the proper context instead of letting it become another catch-all similar to 'like'.

Of course it is a forum natrone, and right now the topic of discussion on this forum is the English Language.

This whole thing started with a member calling a bunch of people stupid while typing like an eight-year old. Littlebat isn't a grammar nazi, she just appreciates good irony. The lesson here is, don't call people stupid if you can't spell stupid.

Spoken like an appreciator.
Littlebat's actually hit on something that's put a hair across my ass. The "new" spelling of archaeology, with no 'a', to 'archeology', and I'm seeing it EVERYWHERE. If you drop the 'a', then what happens to words such as archaic? Suddenly it becomes, what..? Archic? Archeic? It MADDENS ME! Don't change my fucking spellings on me, damn it!

That can't happen effectively if one is more focused on the little dots than anything else. :)

Same here, Seamaiden. I even see it in business letters sent out by my peers. I mean, don't they have spell checkers in their computers? I guess we can chalk this up to today's modern society. Hell, people think nothing of showing up a half-hour late for appointments, or backing out of transactions, even though they've put their promises in writing, and are shattering someone else's hopes and dreams in the process. Go figure. <sigh!>

No shit Vi. Last year, while setting up the network for my company's booth, I noticed the backdrop said "Digital CATV COMMING soon!"...whu? WTF? I told the Director of Sales and Marketing who subsequently did nothing to rectify the issue. We went through the entire event with that typo on the backdrop.

And then...Just the other week, the very same Director walked into my office and handed me a stack of flyers for my techs to hand out. He was quite proud of the artwork and the marketing campaign he had created. That was until I showed him, on the flyer, that he had mispelled "receiver" as "reciever". He mailed them out anyway. What a fucking moron.

And don't even get me started on people arriving late for meetings/appointments. I've walked out of meetings because of that very reason. As if their time is more important than mine.
