Which Seeds Should I Use?

I plan to start some more seeds tonight. Thought I would get some opinions about what ones to use. Last week I germed 8 seeds and only 4 sprouted. So I need some more.

I've got some that my a fellow grower gave me. I wasn't real thrilled with the smoke, but it was good. It was a long flowering sativa dom stain.....

Then I've got the seeds from the one plant that didn't turn hermie on my last grow. It was pollinated by hermies though. Do you think they will herm on me too? I really don't want to deal with that again.:wall:

I also have hundreds of bag seeds from lots of bags over the years. All of which, but 1, herm'd on me last time...

I don't plan to buy any seeds yet as this is only my second grow. I'm working on the room as I go, and plan to buy some when everything is finished and working correctly.bongsmilie:peace:
 
You should keep seeds that you know are going to be kept ungerminated for a while in better conditions.

Seeds last 1 year, 2 years in the ridge, 5 years in the cooler.

Maybe that's why 4 didn't sprout?

I suggest getting the seeds from the fellow grower, lowest chance of hermying, highest chance of germiantion.

Thanks for the storage advice. I'm not sure how old the ones I tried to germinate were. They were also gifted to me. :peace:
 
I'd go with the bag seed man, i got medical bad seeds, long story but they all germinated very well, plus i like being able to call the strain mine since it is unknown, you never know what you get, but if you weren't impressed with the other growers smoke, i would take my luck with the bag seeds

Purchase some professional breeder genetics.

You do not have to spend $800.00 but you can find some very good values for reasonable prices and you have removed almost all questions about the results and quality of what you will end up with.

Id go with the growers seeds just because it reduces your hermie chances but thats just me. Plus if its a long flowering sativa itll give you something to work on for a while to get your bearings. What type have you already germed?

All in good time. Almost all of this is going to my head right now anyway. I need the money more for supplies then genetics right now. Thanks for your opinion!

The ones I started already were some of the only ones I new the name of. I had (4) Purple Jesus, (1) White Widow, and (3) of a Mystery Nug that the guy had forgot to label. I got the WW, 2 of MN, and only 1 of the PJ to germ.:peace:

Word. Sounds like a good variety already; id def. go with the growers seeds to round it off...

I'm with you on trying a second grow before spending the money on designer genetics. Go with the seeds from a fellow grower.

waste of time and luck.
buy good seeds from a proper vendor and all will turn good.
no point in wasting valuable time planting seeds that you dont know what they are to find out down the line they are bagseed hermies or males.
certinally not for me.
only the best shall do.

If money wasn't such a factor I would already have seeds from a proper vendor.
My room is nowhere near complete and needs to be finished properly before I waste my money on good genetics that I feck all up!

Sexual Variants in Cannabis by smokey j 2006
Cannabis has been studied for many years because of its unusual sexuality. Besides the normal dioecious pattern, where each plant bears exclusively male or female flowers, it is not uncommon for some plants to have both male and female flowers. These are called hermaphrodites, or monoecious plants, or intersexes. Hermaphroditic plants form normal flowers of both sexes in a wide variety of arrangements, in both random and uniform distributions.
Natural Hermaphrodites
Some hermaphrodites seem to be genetically determined (protogenous). That is, they naturally form flowers of both sexes given normal growing conditions. Possibly genes carried on the autosomes (the chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes) modify the normal sexual expression. Monoecious varieties have been developed by hemp breeders in order to ensure uniform harvests.
It is also possible that these particular are polyploid, which means they have more than the usual two sets of chromosomes. This kind of hermaphrodite may have XXY (triploid), or XXYY or XXXY (tetraploid) sex chromosomes. However, no naturally occurring polyploids have ever been verified (by observation of the chromosomes) in any population of Cannabis. Polyploids have been induced in Cannabis by using mutagens, such as the alkaloid colchicine.
Whatever then genetic explanation may be, one or more of these natural hermaphrodites may randomly appear in any garden. They are sometimes faster-maturing, have larger leaves, and are larger in overall size than their unisexual siblings. They usually form flowers of both sexes uniformly in time and distribution, and in some unusual patterns. For example, from Mexican seed, we have seen a plant on which separate flowering cluster consisted of both female and male flowers: and upper section of female flowers had upraised stigmas, and a lower section of male flowers dangled beneath the female flowers. In other plants from Mexican seed, the growing tips throughout the plant have female flowers; male flowers sprout from the leaf axils along the main stem and branches. Plants from "Thai" seed sometimes form male and female flowers on separate branches. Branches with female flowers tend to predominate, but branches having mostly male flowers are located throughout the plant.
Abnormal Flowers, Intersexes, Reversals
Gender is set in the new plant at the time of fertilisation by its inheritance of either the X or the Y chromosome from the male (staminate) plant. With germination of the seed, the environment comes into play. Heritage sets the genetic program, but the environment can influence how the program runs. (Sexual expression in Cannabis is delicately balanced between the two.) The photoperiod, for example, controls the plant's sequence of development. Also, the plant's metabolism and life processes are dependent on growing conditions. When the environment does not allow a balance to be maintained, the normal genetic program may not be followed. This is mirrored by abnormal growth or sexual expression.

Hell man, if you already have some WW seeds, I'd give those a shot even if I feared herminess. WW is just frazzlin good smoke.

I mean, any of your three ways would be cool, so do whatever. Like people said, your fellow's seeds are likely to take. If you have some decent stuff from your last grow, there's a good reason to go with that. And bagseed can produce some seriously excellent weed, so hell, I'd say if you're growing weed, it's hard to go wrong. I voted seeds from your fellow grower, but then I saw the stuff you've already got, so I guess I'd say any and all options sound pretty sweet.
