Which is better 2 400watt hps or 1000hps

Hey guys i have a 1000 watt hps currently running a dual spectrum bulb. I have the option of buying 2 400watt hps or 1 1000watt hps. I need to know which is going to give me the biggest yield consider i will be doing sea of green. I know 1000watt gives me the best pentration, but i am not planning on be plants just lots of them so i kinda of thought the 400s might be better. If anyone has any thoughts or a link to somewhere talking about this please help a brother out.peace.

I would guess the 1000 will give BETTER buds.. better aesthetic and some bigger colas..

over all weight... hmmm.. tough call...

Especially if you had the 1000 on a light mover....

Whatis your growing space?

How many plants?

How tall will they be when you flower?

What do you think 2 x 600 or 3 x 400 for a sog?

I don't have any scientific proof for you but I would imagine the 2 400's would be fine for your needs and much easier to deal with heat issues as well. you don't need to deal with the light penetration issue so much so 2 400's should be ok. although if you are considering 2 lamps i might suggest going with 2 600's you will be getting the best of both worlds then, you can get closer without heat issues and you will have even more light for your gals. Just my opinion.

The questions posed by Garden Knowm are things you'll need to answer for a good guesstimate...

I grow with 2/400w lights - 1 MH and 1 HPS, but I also have 1 HPS 1000 watt-er in a separate room for strains that I want to grow bigger/taller. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone with 2/600 watt lamps...

Also, since you are looking at getting 2 lights - invest in MH and HPS, having both spectrums of light makes for great weed indeed! ...lol

Hey Im in your signature! that rocks, I feel special now I agree, if you could spend a little more and get 2 600s instead of 2 400s, that would definitely be the best options, look at the lumen/watt ration on a 400w hps vs a 600w...600s are more efficient

as far as cost efficiency, I think 2 600s would be better...with 3 400s you get about 165,000 lumens, with 2 600 you get 180,000 lumens

i belive it comes down to what size plants an aera he will be using...1k's generally create denser thicker buds further down then the others but as the light travels further to the outside plants you start decreasing in density so ina a 4x4 if using a just 1 1k i'd go with 5-10 nice sized plants...now if you want a better foot print in the 4x4 you would go with the 2 600's with sog/scrog style plants where the light desn't need to travel threw alot of canopy to the buds..imo i wouldn't go with the 400's for penitration concerns an having to use multiple outlets...less plugs the better imo...peace az

however you could spred the light more evenly with 3 400s, so I guess it depends on your grow room

3 400's seems like a bit more hastle as far as setting up your venting and raising and lowering the lights. if your going to go with 1200 watts total you will get more lumens with less work on 2 600's.

5ft x 5ft under 1000w = 25 sq ft.
(3x3 under 400w = 9 sq ft) x 2 = 18 sq ft. + 3 square feet since you'd be overlapping = 21 sq ft

Considering all the extra money you'll spend setting up 2 lights instead of 1, the obvious choice is to go for the 1000w. You will have no problems fitting 98 plants under a single 1000w. 98 girls + 1 mother plant and you're under the 5 year mms.

You're right; I was assuming he'd be staying under 100 plants with no veg time.

Hey guys thanks for all the response. I will give you some more info on my growing situation. . I will be starting 5 packs of 10 seeds each. From my experience 8 out of ten will germ, the 5 out of 8 will be female. This is all just estimating from my only grow ever with weed although i grow other things. Thats about 25 seed plants that will veg for about 6 weeks. The strains are going to be satori, hashberry, kalichakra.., The other two i dont have yet but i am leaning towards white widow and L.A. confidential. THe only thing i have grown has been ak 47. After i harvest the plants i will be growing in sog beds From clones of the seed plants. I plant on vegin the clones for about 2 weeks under 400watt mh. I vent my 1000s its in a cooltube with a 8 inch fan on it. If i got another 1000watt it would be the same way. If i go with 400watters then i will just have lots of fans blowing across them. The room will stay under 90 for sure though. And i will be using co2 soon. Growing in fox forest. Given that information i hope it makes it easier. Also i would love 2 600watters but the for the price right now i have to go with 2 400watts or 1 1000watt. Any
