Where to stay in Amsterdam?

I'm planning a brief to trip to Amsterdam and want to stay in a hotel that is close to a number of the main coffeeshops? I'm currently thinking somewhere close to the central station will be good. I'll probably want to stay somewhere nice since I'm making the trip. Let me know your suggestions and anything else worth noting about Amsterdam.

I guess nobody knows Amsterdam, but I think I will stay at the NH Barbizon Palace because it is close to the area that I think I want to be in and a nice hotel.

Rent a houseboat! We got one years ago. Awesome! Most hotels wont allow smoking. We paid $150 a night.
