when you top your plant can you use the cut off bit to clone?

yes if it has enough stem and leaf matter on it. you can clone from virtually any branch that has a leaf on it.

Sure you can . Why not? I take clones from all parts of my mothers including top branches and notice no difference. I don't put much stock in the "take bottom branches for clones" school of thought.

Good thread... good question! I hadn't even thought about this when I was topping my plants. Thinking back I probably only had one whose stem on top would have been long enough.... but it's something I'll keep in mind for the future. :D

I was wondering about this too, because it is just about time to start topping mine. I was thinking that the top might produce one hell of a bud just because it was the TOP of the plant. Make any sense to you?

lol yep.
i spent all day in nearly all the big gardening and hardware stores today and i couldnt find a HPS :(
any suggestions?

yes ebay has a 150 watt hps for 56 bucks including shipping, and bulb,,u cant beat that,if u want a 400 watt hps your looking at a minumum of 120

I know your meant to use one of the lower branches but can you use the top part of the plant?

I did this with my bubblelicious but the leaves wer way too big and it didnt make it even after a slight trim job on the leaves lol, Im sure it would work, im just crap at clones lol 1 out of 4 take for me lol.:joint:

hey man yea clonings difficult.

there are a few thigns that help a lot:

-mist the plant every MORNING, of every day 2 weeks prior to cloning.
-as soon as you've taken your cutting let the stem sit in a vase of water (rids air pockets)
-scratch the lowest inch of the stem
- dip the scratched part in rooting hormone
-start vegging it immediately, but if possible in indirect light.

that should increase your success rate.

good luck

I think the only difference you may notice when taking cuttings from the top of the plant rather than from the bottom is the time it'll take to root. The last time I cloned my tops, they took about two weeks to show roots. My last clones I grabbed from the bottom, and in 8 days roots were all over the place.

friend and I took 300 clones off of 3 plants , wonder how they are gonna root =S

i found my HPS for a very good price, look in the yellow pages for a "Lighting Center" or like an electrical supply company that sells industrial lighting

ahhh thats why bottom cuttings are more used

It would seem that the reason more bottom cuttings are used, is the simple fact that there are a lot more bottom cuuting than there are tops.
