when to use nutes in a hempey grow

I plan on growing 3 autos in hempy buckets. I will be using just 2ltr bottles with just perlite. So I was wanting to know when should I start using nutes? I mean if you use them before the roots hit the bottom. Is that just a waste of your nutes? should I be watering with just water till the roots get to the bottom?
