When should i start flowering generally

I think my plants are going on 5 or 6 weeks old now under a 400hps, but they are only about 8" tall. I know that technically it is best to wait until nodes alternate and preflowers show, but it seems to be taking a long time. When do you normally start flowering?
I have plenty of head space btw, about 6' and growing an indica dominant strain

bumppp. I dont care much about overall yield since im a light smoker, but i really want some smelly dense cannabis

Can anyone who flowers before presexing please help me determine when i should flower my girls?
They are on their 8th nodes now. Tight and bushy with growing branches pushing out the upper fan leaves

you can flower when ever you want. they will sex soon after you start to flower them. people flower from seed.

i would flower now if you dont care much about yield.. like humboldt said you can flower right from seed if you want.. clone in my case, i flower mine when they are 4" tall

its really up to the grower like mentioned above.. If I'm growing an Indica, I wait til they are about 18" tall, If I'm growing a sativa, I start at 12" tall.. Some people wait til they are 2' tall and some start straight away.. Your choice my friend..

On a side note, I like to clone first and label them, this way I pick the clone from the best female to mother..

ie

Plant A
Clone A1, A2, A3
Plant B
Clone B1, B2, B3
etc etc

Makes life easy, then you can toss your male plants and clones.

Best of luck to ya

and another point that none of us mentioned is after you transfer to 12/12 they will continue to grow up to 2' on some pheno's

Good point reggae!

Keep that in mind, if you have limiyed vertical space, plants sometimes triple in size when in bloom (my NL's go friggin wild when in bloom).. Now that im strictly indoors I prefer shorter indica's or supercrop my NL's...

Great advice reggae!!

Thanks for the tips guys. I think im going to trigger flowering this saturday. Cant wait to see the bud sites start frosting up :-P
