When is the earliest I can clone?

My plants are in the veg. stage and they are about 12" tall. I want to start growing more plants as soon as possible (I just started growing, and it's kind-of addicting).

When is the best time to clone? Can I clone my 12" plants?

Are the plants you want to clone from clones themselves or were they grown from seed? If they are from seed then you should wait until you know the sex (a week or two into flowering) before you take clones. You only want to clone females ;)

If they are clones from females then at 12" they should be fine to start cloning.

Wait until you have some branches at the bottom of the plant that are a minimum 4" long and have at least 2-3 sets of nodes.

You never want to take clones from female plants unless you absolutely have to. Once plants are flowering it takes a long time for them to get back into veg mode.

This is just my opinion but heres what I would do.

Take clones from your 12" vegging plant. Put them under a fluorescent light outside of your grow room. They don't need much light as clones. A fluro will be just fine.

Your clones should root in 5-10 days. While you are waiting for your clones to root start what's left of your 12" into flower (12/12). By the time your clones are rooted your 12" should have shown sex or should soon.

If your 12" shows that it's a female throw the clones you took from it before you flowered it and put it in your grow room under 12/12. They will be small and this will be SOG style. Flower them out. *Don't put all of the clones into flower. Save one or two for mothers*

Because the 12" started sexing a week before you will get an advanced preview of what the rest of the ladies are going to do. While your ladies flower, grow out the one or two clones you kept in veg state and let them get big.

A few weeks before you are ready to harvest take clones from your mothers and get them rooted and let them get a little bit of vegging in. Once you pull your ladies from the flowering room for harvest replace them with your clones that have rooted for a week and vegged for 2 weeks and there you have it. A never ending cycle of goodness.

That's just what I would do

I disagree about taking clones in the flowering stage being bad. I wasn't talking about taking clones late in the flowering stage when buds are being formed; I was talking about taking clones from females in the first couple of weeks.... when gender first shows. There is no problem doing this. Personally if I'm growing from seed I'm not going to waste my time or effort taking clones from plants I'm not sure of the gender.

To each their own.

When your plants have 8 nodes you can tell the sex but you have to have a magnifying glass. Look very closely at the 8th node; this is where the very first signs of sex show up. If you see a little lump, it's a boy; if you see two little hairs, it's a girl.

The problem with taking clones from flowering plants is that it takes a while for them to return back to veg state.

About wasting time. If you take clones from a flowering plant they will have to root and return to veg until they're the desired size for your flowering preference. If you take clones before you throw your mother into 12/12 you can flower the mother while the clones are rooting. By the time the clones are rooted you should be starting to see sex on the mother. Then you know whether or not to grow out your clones and you won't have to wait for them to revert back to veg state.

I think my method is more efficient and will take less time in the long run but whatever. It was just my 2 cents. I'm not here to debate an opinion

I've done it more then a few times now and I take the clones as soon as gender shows.... the clones root within 10 days and don't seem to suffer any slow down reverting to veg. because they haven't been in flower long enough (usually less then 2 weeks). By the time they've rooted in 10 days they are adjusted back to the 18/6 light cycle and do just fine.

I just started my last 4 Blueberry seeds and plan on doing the same thing with these (hopefully I'll get at least 1 girl).

P.S. If you didn't want to debate your opinion then you should have just stated yours instead of quoting my post and saying I'm wrong ;)
