When and how to *top*

Hey all, first time poster here.

I'm 5-6 weeks into my 8 week veggie stage. I've heard a lot about topping, but don't know how or when to. I got four kids *hopefully girls* in 10" pots. They range from 9-12" right now. They are under a 400w MH. In 2 weeks I will start to flower. Now this is what I've read/heard.

1. You should top right before flowering to do two things. Help create two colas and then use the top cut section to clone.

2. Only top if you need to keep the kid short due to height constraints.

I need some Jedi advice, help.

if i may make a suggestion mate;-)---dont top your plant as you will be removing the apical meristem:-(-and you dont wanna do that(coz thats where most of the goodness grows from)....instead of topping your plant why dont you LST(low stress train)it instead? it has the same benefits as topping coz it allows ur plant to generate laterally.....hope this made sence as im baked -sorry...lol
peace;-)
