wet paper towel always works for me, just keep it damp and warm...it should only take a few days...if it takes longer than a week, toss em out and get some fresh seeds...

should i use hot water or cold and put in a warm place

I just did a little test with some seeds given to me I germed 4 in wet paper towel in plastic bag with heat mat under-two germed after 2 days. I then soaked 3 in a cup of water for 24 hours then put into the same paper towel-all three germed in 8 hours. I guess soaking for a bit speeds up the seed cracking, but i find paper towel method most successful.
