i'm what you might call "concentrate impaired". i don't grow big enough batches to really play with extraction methods, so i usually stick to making smaller batches of kief with my trim and pressing it.

i use a plain 'ol cheapo press, and when i press it, i tighten it like a mofo and then stick it on the gas stove burner for about a minute, and twist it some more (i have to wear neoprene gloves and use a potholder to torque it to the max). heat, twist, heat, twist, until i can't turn it any more. when i open it, i have the expected grade C hash puck, but also this delightful golden goopy residue all over the metal parts. so i sharpened a flathead screwdriver with a nail file to enhance its scrapiness, and now i smoke the shit out of that stuff.

the shit is fantastic. it tastes a lot like bho, and has a similar consistency, but i'm wondering just what the hell i would refer to it as. i don't use any solvents, just plain old heat and pressure. it's obviously not as pure as bho, and i don't know what type of heat is the best to use when pressing kief, but i make it so hot that i can't touch it for 20 minutes.

is it just ghetto hash oil? is there a specific name for heat/pressure extractions? is this soooo twenty years ago? i was already getting around a 15% return ratio when making kief. this stuff bumps it closer to 25%. if i were to use a bigger press i could easily get several grams of this stuff in an hour, which for a small grower is kind of a big deal.

To me your heat is too high. I love pressed kief but use a much lower temp when pressing. I never let it get too hot to handle. I also never get oil. If I get it too hot the oil runs out of the puck.

How does it taste and does it get you high/

the reason i started using all the heat was that my pucks weren't staying formed. it took me a while to realize that after a certain point i was actually grinding the cheap metal puck inside and making a severe indent, and not pressing the kief to its max. so i used the heat for a while to make up for the inadequate pressing, and i finally came up with a way to stop the grinding problem and ended up combining the heat with the max pressiness and got what i got.

i could just not use the heat now that i have the press working properly, but honestly that gooey golden shit is a real treat and it does indeed taste incredible and sends me to the moon. the hash puck that remains is still a pretty decent smoke, it's just a bitch to chop up to smoke because it's like a rock after it cools. it still has a decent flavor and gets me stoned and goes a long way, and getting that gooey stuff is like a special bonus. i'm probably never going to bother making bho because i'm the type that would manage to have an accident, and this stuff is as close as i'm going to get for a while. there was an issue with the grow and i'm rationing what's left until i get shit going again, and for every 1-1.5 g puck i make, i get a good blob of the goo and it brightens my life for a bit.

i don't know whether it would be better to use lower temps or higher temps to get such and such out of it, but it's really good to smoke. the heat also seems to take care of the funny taste that happens to the puck when there is a bit too much plant matter in the kief. brings out more of a hashy taste imo.

Be carefull tho, you get that heat up too high and you will start degrading your THC, this happens from 240F and up. Ide heat it at a lower temp for longer, maybe try to whip it when its still hot and turn it into a wax consistency?
