What type of light should I use?

I see people using all sorts of different fluorescent lighting for their plants. For a beginner what should I use?:leaf:

That's a bigger question than you probably think. 2700 spectrum aka Cool White or CW is for veg stae while 6700 WW warm white is for flower... Or you can grow 12/12 from seed under just flowering light. The shape of the bulbs don't matter. Compact flouros that go in a lamp will give the same kinds of light as tubes. You have to read the bulbs to get the right ones. New grower to new grower, Go to youtube and search "jorge cervantes" there are many vids out there that explain lighting. ALSO GO TO THE FAQ AREA OF THIS SITE. I just went there the other day and there is a basic grow manual there. Good luck.

this is just MY suggestion.. im sure you'll hear alot of different opinions from different people/sources, but i can only do me, so thats what i do....
ok, im going to be pretty general in advice, as i dont know your space limitations, soil (or) hydro, etc etc...
for vegetation, i would check into a (minimum of) a 4 bulb t-5 fixture/ballast set up. like this one:http://www.htgsupply.com/growlights.asp?categoryID=1&subcategoryID=107&typeID=69
for flowering, i'm suggesting something that will do the job VERY well, and since i dont know anything about the # of plants your wanting to do, im suggesting this anyways, because it is the perfect size to have in use with any lighting additions you WILL make in the future. in other words, if/when you decide to go a little bigger/bolder, you wont have to throw this light out, but it will make a great additional light to anything new you decide to use: http://www.htgsupply.com/growlights.asp?categoryID=1&subcategoryID=184&typeID=95
dont get freaked out by the prices, these are ONLY examples to the answer of your question. these are what KIND of lighting i suggest, not the exact brand n' shit. if you expand on some details about your plan, it would be much easier to help.. peace out

Assuming you want to grow for yourself and perhaps get a friend or two high .....like myself.... pop some beans and put'em under some cfl or floros and let'em rip....then have patience.....you'll have a harvest, perhaps small...but still a harvest AND most of all, you'll learn a lot during the life of your plant.:bigjoint:

Yeah but what type of fluorescent light? Like what watt? And yeah I'm just growing ONE plant.

If you want to have a really nice plant, go with on of those 2' x 2' T5 units that are a little over 100 watts. If you want a nice plant, go with a 65 watt(minimum) CFL with one of those cone shaped reflectors, and hang it directly above the plant, liks 3-4" away from the tops. You can also use 2-3 23 watt CFLs and get the same resiluts, so the choice is yours. If you're looking to get a decent yield, i wouldn't go any smaller that those choices. :)

1 plant:

4 - 27w daylight/coolwhite CFL's would be plenty for 2 months veg.

Then use a 250w HPS in flower.

you kinda have to disregard the "equal to xxx # watt regular incandescent (sp?) bulb"
go by the true wattage of the CFL bulb. and an avg. rule of them would be:
100wt for your plant, 50wt for each additional plant. i think that this theory is undershot, especially when using CFL's, as they dont push out the lumens like an MH or HPS light, nor give the light penetration that a HID bulb gives.
haha. at one point in time, i was vegging 9 plants with over 900 watts of twist-bulb style CFLs.
thats just not practical though.
