What size grow tent for 6 plants?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what size grow tent to start out with.

The 6 plant maximum is based on the new laws that recently passed in California. Although I have my medical card, I'd rather be on the safe side for the future. More specifically, I'm looking to harvest the equivalent of 2-3oz a month, which is 8-12oz per harvest.

This would be my first grow, so I understand the yield will be lower initially as I learn :) From what I've gathered lurking around the forums an ideal tent size should be 3x3, which I'd probably go with a 600watt HID for the lighting.

I definitely want to avoid the future issue of not having enough space. While I've got plenty of space near a window, I don't want to get anything bigger than necessary (holds more than 6 plants). Does a 3x3 tent seem like the ideal size? Also, what about height? It seems like 5ft and 7ft are fairly standard. I believe my ceilings are at least 8ft tall.

Thanks in advance for the advice. Based on that, do you have any favorite tents that are readily available. It seems like I'd want to vent the hot air out an exhaust port through the window.

Cheers.

never grown in tents so cant help you there im an outdoor but i do have to say is dont set a certain weight you want to get from a first grow just focus on getting the plant/s from start to finish and getting a good cure for good smokable buds then once you have your growing technique down you can focus on increasing yeild

how long will you veg/how big- these plants before flowering?
a 600 watt will be fine for 6 plants, vegged to about 10 inches and flipped, maybe, depending on strain, grow habits.
I love tents, used to before my pro rooms were built. I had several 2x4, five feet tall, one bigger one 7 feet tall, with a 6x 5 footprint, and some smaller ones for cloning. You'll need several for a proper perpetual harvest though. 3x3 is kinda small, could grow a nice tree under a 600 in there, all by itself. buy the max size you can afford/fit into the available space and know thats the best you could have done

have fun

A 4x4 with a 600w and/or a 5x5 with a 1K.....
6 plants is pushing it in a 4x4, unless you stay at about 3 - 3.5 ft.....Works ok in 5x5.....
Yet are you going to go 3 vegging and 3 blooming for a perpetual?
Or just 6 at a time-run start to finish?

I've used 1.2x1.2 with a 600air cooled hood for years but it will fit 6. But if u just do 4plants you will still get the same yield. People think more plants more yield but with 4 you get a better light coverage and better airflow around the plants and less trimming with same amount of weight:)

@Prince4118 I totally agree. I'm in this first and foremost to learn. I don't expect much my first grow. Eventually I'm looking to grow enough to be in line with my consumption, then enough to experiments with (edibles/tinctures, etc.), then enough to gift :)

@Alienwidow It seems a bit like the chicken and egg argument. 6 plants is the max I want to have, but not required. From what I've read 600watts is the most efficient wattage for watt/gram ratio. I like efficiency :)

@chemphlegm Thanks for sharing your experiences. Honestly, no clue how long I'll veg them for yet. I guess that'll depend mostly on the height of my tent :) Since I'm not limited to a closet, just standard ceilings, I might as well go 7ft tall. A perpetual grow seems like a good goal for the future.

@Dr. Who I didn't plan on a perpetual grow the first time around :) 6 plants is the max, but not required. Do people do perpetual grows in a single tent? I imagine you'd have to have a 2nd tier because of the different lighting schedules.

@ganjaman1476 Good to know and think about. It seems like a 3x3 would be too small for 6 plants, as there would be overcrowding and bad light coverage. A 4x4 would be better for that many plants.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

No and that's why I asked!

So it sounds like your settling in on a 4x4 w/600w.....

Take a moment to think about the fact that many will feel a real urge or pain to go bigger at some point....If you want to grow sativa's or high sativa cross's.....I strongly suggest you go with the 5x5 and 1K...

The other choice would be a 4x8 with 2 600's......

No room for the 4x8 - then really think about this and the 5x5.....Bigger plants/bigger yields.

@Dr. Who Funny thing is, I've been thinking that way. I originally thought to get a 2.5x1.5x3 tent and thought I'd want to go bigger right away :) I have a fairly large area to take advantage of now, but may not have the same luxury in the future.

I can fit (2) 3-gallon pots in my 36" x 20" perfect with pretty much no room to spare.

Hopefully that may give you an idea of sizing...I am not good at math, hopefully you are thought :-)
