100% BUD ROT. CUT THOSE OFF OF THE BRANCH BEFORE YOU HANG!! That stuff will spread like the plague in your dry room.

Hello! I have a citrus crush, outdoor grow, norcal. This is my first time harvesting.

The tops look healthy but the buds below look very brownish. Can somebody tell me if this is normal or if this is bad? Is it still good to dry?
I also see bud rot in the top cola. Get in there and cut that out of there and hope for the best. If you hang it as is it will spread. I would look at the drying process as very "high risk". Crank the heat really high for the first couple of days and run a dehumidifier. This seems like a bad move in general, but trust me, you can't give Botrytis an apportunity to spread or it will. You're dealing with malignant bud cancer here. After a couple days of intense heat (high 80's or higher) and humidity as low as you can get it, you can taper off and slow the drying process down. If you try and slow dry the bud by the books, you're going to lose most of it if it all looks like the pic you posted. And again, CUT THE BROWN BUDS OFF AND FLUSH EM DOWN THE TOILET!

They are brown and dry.
I thought bud rot is supposed to be gray...
There's nothing else it could be bro. I've seen it 100 times, and it happens to the best of us! Sometimes when you bust open a bud it looks gray and slimey, but when it attacks the tops like that it always looks brown.

maybe too l8 but you can just cut out the rot and let the rest of the plant mature. dont smoke any rotted but, the only two deathes from smoking cannabis were from smoking rotten bud, it caused some nasty lung problem and they died as a result

Not to doubt you on this but... do you got a source for that?

I just did a quick google search... only thing I could find was a site that was obviously anti-marijuana saying "see its not as safe as everyone says" and then talks about a German research project or something where it examined 15 peoples deaths attributed to MJ and in all but 2 cases found to be something else..

For the two cases they found, one 23 yr old and 28 yr old.
The 23 year old "had a serious undetected heart problem"
and the 28 year old "had a history of drug and alcohol abuse"
“To our knowledge, these are the first cases of suspected fatal cannabis intoxications where full post-mortem investigations… were carried out,” researchers said in the study, published in Forensic Science International this month. “After exclusion of other causes of death we assume that the young men experienced fatal cardiovascular complications evoked by smoking cannabis

Although this article didnt mention anything about bud rot or mold or anything so I dont know if these were the deaths you were referring to.
Heres the article I was reading from https://time.com/10372/marijuana-deaths-german-study/

TBH I did not search past the first 5 or so results on google for your sentence of "two deaths from smoking cannabis were from smoking rotten bud"

Not trying to call you out or anything like that, Im genuinely very curious to read about this.

An interesting article I found while looking through the results was this on the different types of molds found in cannabis, and a couple details about people getting pneumonia or certain lung infections and stuff, but nothing I saw about deaths, and everyone had some sort of underlying condition such as asthma or heart conditions.
