What does this mean?

What does it mean if your bud smells like nothing but hay until you grind it up? And then has a really pungent skunky smell?

I have a bud (that I plucked early) that has been dried and has been sitting in a really small jar with some shake and a 62% humidipak. It feels too dry and I never even burped the jar.. but it did still feel a little moist when I put it in. I'm assuming there just wasn't enough bud in the jar to maintain the moisture level or something, idk. But what would cause the bud to only smell after it's been ground up? Is there something I can do to fix it or is it a lost cause?

I've just finished curing some White Shark that's pretty much the same. Although it sits at 55% in the jar [average of 3 cheap mini-hygrometer readings of questionable accuracy] it feels a touch dry until it's chopped. Doesn't have a strong smell until broken up. Smokes smooth & tasty with a lovely high. Mine doesn't smell like hay though, nice bud smell but not very strong at all when it's in the jar. You should be able to tell if it's still too moist when you chop a bud for a mix.

I grew some Super Skunk over twenty years ago that just stunk, beautiful, but a cop didn't need a sniffer dog. I knocked on a mates closed door with just a few grams of SS in my pocket in a zip lock bag. He could smell it through the door. Although it was the strongest pot I've ever smoked, I didn't grow that strain again simply because of it's over-powering smell.

Some strains don't have a strong smell after curing. But hay?

SimonD says in his stickied thread that 55-60% is the desired storage range. I'd want my pot below 62%.
Did you stuff up? Idk. I always erred on the side of caution & tended to over dry. Since following the advice here on Riu & with the help of some mini-hygrometers, my end product has improved.
As long as you don't have mould, put it down to experience, give thanks to the Bud-Gods & enjoy your bud & get some mini-hygrometers for your next effort.

It's a lost cause my man, if it has a grassy , hay , leaf taste it was dried to fast. Take your time drying and curing that is the make or break of any grow I say. I have some vanilla kush that's been cured for over a year. Smells amazing, I did it just to see if taste or high changes over time. High does down grade a bit but the taste and jar smell is to die for!!! Still a great smoke
