I've been speaking with outdoor growers around here and people have been using 6' circle baskets made of 2 foot high chicken wire. They then put their amended dirt in the baskets.

Any thoughts regarding this?

Cause it's more work for you? I actually agree with you (since most people can't grow ridiculous trees in solo cups like fdd)...if you're going for ridiculous yield, use at least 10 gallon buckets or bags. I've also heard of people using burlap sacks because the roots will grow through it...that way you have some nice fertilized dirt, but also endless dirt in the ground for roots to extend into. I've never seen anybody do that here, so I don't really know the results.

Plus, he mentioned using fox farms. That stuff is not cheap...getting 15 gallons per plant is gonna add up reaaal fast.

I second that. Man my last grow was only a dozen indoor, and i was using pots between 7 and 15 gallon size. I used a soil which i personally believe is superior to foxs farms but it cost about as much. The soil i used was aurora innovations organic soil mix. At 10 dollars a bag i easly spent 150 on only a dozen plants. If you had the access to a good hydro/grow shop i would recommend talking to a clerk about custom mixing your own soil. The shop i frequent has every soil amendment you would ever need to create your own soil mix . In the long run if your going big out doors, or even if your not your likely to save a few bucks in the end going this way.

if you didn't want to spend anything on soil I thought that I could dig a big hole where I want my plant, then put the dirt through a screen making it thin and loose then put it back in and plant your babies, would it work better than just planting in the ground?

Better than nothing, yes. If you live somewhere with particularly fertile soil then that'd be fine. Basically that's just aerating the soil. Most of us change the soil because the natural soil isn't all that great.

This is a question about fdd's pic. Is it normal for a plant that big to have that many buds on it or did he top it to make it do that? anyone have an opinion, I just haven't seen that many buds before even on larger plants.

its mostly cuz FDD is a magic weed elf and he sprinkles them with lucky charms....even if you topped a million times w/out the lucky charms your bud bushes wouldnt be that big
