What are your favourite films of all time

yeh I agree man... the way I look at it, there are two types of movies: entertainment, and art (film, if you will).

My example is always mortal kombat (the first movie): Its a good, highly entertaining movie, but a horrible film. Thats how crank is, a good movie, but a bad film... Thats why I gauged it on the Statham Scale of Crappiness.

Remembering back on Crank, it was actually a really good movie. I think I actually sat down and watched it twice...

wouldn't you say that matrix 1 =film, while matrix 2&3 = movie?

even tho the sequels weren't up to par with the first one, they still beat the shit out of most other sequels that were coming out around it (not including any comic movies, they're formula is to make continual sequels).

in my opinion, the 2nd 2 movies did exactly what the were ment to do,

*be flashy and kick alot of ass without being TOO gory
*sell tickets and DVD's
*pretend to be smart that way people can justify watching a main actor that cant act and a woman who is only hot cause she is bendiy enough to scorpion kick some one in the face while wearing latex beating the shit out of people for 2 and a half hours each movie.

I'll give ya that the sequels were successful in selling tickets, games, blah blah... but i do feel that the wachoski's vision was clouded by the prospect of millions upon millions of dollars, and the resulting product is a pretentious movie which sacrifices coherence and exposition in favor of elaborate action scenes.

I do agree that matrix 1= film and matrix 2 & 3= movie, but I don't gauge them the same way that I would, say, Crank, because they were intended to be "films" rather than entertaining movies. If the trilogy had been a simple man vs machine, oppressed versus oppressors movie explained not by dialogue but by actions scenes, then I would give it way more credit than I do... but they presented it as a film, they sold it as a film, and therefore I judge it as a film.

I will give you that the sequels, especially the second one, had awesome actions scenes, probably better than most current "ground breaking" action movies, but that doesn't change the fact that they are sandwiched between nonsensical philosophical crap. From what I gleaned from the story, Neo is a recurring glitch in an imperfect system that grows exponentially in power with each reincarnation (although its more like a respawn), and as the system advances so too do the components of that system (i.e agent smith) until a critical point is reached where the system can no longer maintain order and is consumed by its parts. In short, Machine world's bad, humans are sad, software is mad, Neo's rad.

It shouldn't take three movies to tell that story.

hahah i'm with you HighPhi, you can't go wrong with some good ol' shaw brothers...

5 deadly venoms and return of 5 deadly venoms are awesome, so are flying guillotine, drunken master, blade of fury... so many good ones, and the beauty is that any non-descript shaw bros movie is definately entertaining, and most of the time good!

Abudsmoker: IMO The Departed was fucking awesome, and I went into it thinking it would suck and be a shitty americanized remake of a sick japanese movie... I was wrong! You should check out infernal affairs 1 and 2, if i remember 3 sucks ass... haha..

Also, a good infernal affairs-esque (but way more violent as it is john woo) movie is A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2... (again, 3 really sucks ass... its like a disease... it already infected the Spiderman franchise [ZING!]...)

I dunno why no one ever listens to me (actually I do, its because i'm not too well known here...) but i'm telling you, and i watch alot of movies, but ATTACK THE GAS STATION... i've never had anyone watch it on my recomendation and not think it was awesome.

a couple other good movies: Kikujiro, Story of Riki (Riki-oh!), Six String Samurai, Battle Royale, Bullet in the Head, Munna Bhai MBBS (if you're open minded and don't mind random song in your movies), Bottle Rocket, Way of the Gun, evil dead trilogy, Man without a name trilogy (Good, bad, the ugly, Fistful of dollars, few dollars more), Fritz the Cat, Bubba Ho-tep, Dr Strangelove...

"Fucking random selection" you say? Well yes... but they're all good, and entertaining, and worth watchin imo...

Also, i would recommend checking out Great Teacher Onizuka and Bleach... they're both anime, but hey, they're pretty entertaining ( I know, I know, "NERD ALERT" [in best austin powers voice])

Also, if you love excruciatingly bad movies, I recommend Killjoy 1, and Trolls 2

also check out some Troma movies: Class of nuke 'em high 1-3, Tromeo and Juliet, SGT Kabukiman NYPD...

I'll shut up now.

I've seen some of that troma stuff, most of it is like porn with bad effects and worse acting but they do have some funny moments

yeh man, that's exactly what they are, but they're hilarious... troma makes an art out of making really shitty movies... although stick to the "mainstream" troma movies, as there are many under the Troma tag but they are just shitty, without the fun or hilarity.

NGT... that's a sick sig ya got there... is that from something?
