West Coast Heat Wave Coming

Weather warnings are being posted for heat for around 3 days of 105-110 degree heat coming in this weekend thru mid next week. Are there any tips from experienced growers who have been thru this so the plants dont become crispy critters. Im assuming mega water. Our sandy soil here worries me since sand gets so hot.

Three things that come to mind: mulch, shade cloth, plenty of water. But I'm not an experienced grower, so you may want to disregard that.

Yea i was thinking of heading up to get some mulch n wood chips. Water I will. Shade cloth would be sort of hard at this point over a 880 sq. ft. area.

Well, in all fairness, you didn't say how big the area was. But yeah, I can see how that would be difficult.

I helped a friend build a shade structure over an 60x100 area you can buy shade cloth in bulk rolls I think up to 40' wide. We used 4x4 on concrete stands that you can buy at Home Depot. We used 2x6's on the top of the 4x4's. left some distance between the uprights and tied everything together with outdoor 3/16 and 1/4 rope. We pounded cement stakes in the ground at the ends to tie the ropes to. We bought some cool plastic clips to attach the cloth to the ropes. It worked great till he had 80 to 100 mile an hour winds. The structure was fine but the shade cloth was shreaded. The materials minus the shade cloth costed around $900.

That sounded like me two years ago. I ran two 20ft. 1 1/4" pvc pipes over the 22 ft. span and made a hoop building 36ft. long. I got the reinforced sheeting in the 40 ft size with the reinforced threads in it. Should have not used two pipes at 40 ft. across the building. It made it a little to tall. Looked really nice, had windows for cans cut in and made a nice door and looked like a outdoor party center all summer stuff was growing like crazy. Well, fall came. Rain and 50mph winds came in so kiss that goodbye. Trashed it and damn near blew it across the field like toilet paper. Just shredded it when the wind got under it.

I'm in the neighborhood...I just water at dusk and dawn...the plants will tell ya when they need attention...so far this year I have watered maybe 5 times...damp cool spring/early summer...hth

wood chips can be acidic changing the ph of your soil so watch out I just give my girls plenty of water n watch for signs of wilting

I flooded my plain last night and the girls are diggin the sun today. 105 degrees in the shade. And thats pretty fucking hot for NorCal. I put up extra shade cloth for them today though. My squash is wilting from the heat though It's supposed to be heat resistant Mexican Grey Zuccini. So much for heat resistant. My regular zuccini is fine. And the tomatoes are BOOMIN"!

I see the weather channel added a 4th 100 degree day now. Great, last years heat wave stunted or screwed plants up. I see ten days of high 90's and 100's. If these wood chips have hi ph not sure what to do for a sandy soil below. Sand gets hot.

Put some shade cloth over the soil.

Crazy out there today, going to have 6 days in a row of this shit. The real test will be on monday or Tuesday, they can usually take a couple day's 100plus but 6th day gonna be a test good luck, I brought in a backup ac for my room it stayed steady 75, wish it was cooler but I can work with that. Anyways good luck

Never had a problem with heat, they love it long as they have enough water

Add some potassium silica during the days leading up to the hot days and during, it will help with heat.

Well I bought the Silica Blast told it helps with heat stress IDK. Watered good tonight n will hit it in morn. 95 today, 98 sat & sun. 105 thru thurs. my indoors are fine though and a/c was struggling but bought a 8" can fan max and that big ass raptor 8 light hood and venting room out side and lowered the 1000 watters. Love the new stuff 8" ducting makes it fun to walk around. Room now at 73 no problem down about 20deg. Should be fun this week though with outdoor girls. Wife said to just stand outside and drink lots of beer and try to get giant beer gut big enough to shade the garden lol. She might be on to something.

There are a few Cen Cal Growers.. who are use to the heat.. we get temps from 100-115 yearly here

I have never lost a plant here due to heat...

I strung up a shade clothe last year hot glued the clothe to itself to make a hole to slide the string thru and hung her up..
