Week 2 (what's going on?)

Hello everyone!

This has been a little over two weeks. Is the growth stunted? The leaves are kind of canoeing downwards. Overwatering/under watering? One of them is clawing as well. I'm assuming the soils just too hot.

-450w MH (lowered it 75% from 600W through ballast)

-keeping pH in check

-pretty low humidity hovering around 20 (getting a humidifier)

-about 81F in there

I was assuming I'm not getting enough cO2. Working on fixing that now. What do you guys think?

I drench those solo cups with seedlings like that n don't water til its bone dry .. Sometimes it takes 5 days to dry out real good and I use ffof too.



Yeah..they look small for 14 days old but probably because you aren't watering them n its real dry in there.

Oh wow, good to know. I just watered them till they dripped. One plant started dropping a bit though :/
 
1) 400 watts for seedlings............error. Too much. Natural sunlight is great for seedlings. Stick em on the window sill until they outgrow cup and are ready for transplant
2) pH only important in feed mix. You should only be using water. Soil is Fox farm, perfect.
3) Why is humidity so low? Spray water (foliar feed) if things look really dry.
4) Carbon Dioxide........fageddaboitit......carbon dioxide is used in a controlled environment. There's plenty in our existing air to handle your plant needs. You don't have an environmentally controlled grow room.
5) 81 degrees. Nice....

1. I get mixed information about this. I've heard you can grow under CFL, MH, HPS; I've seen a range of watts.
2. I've heard pH is important during the whole grow especially during seedling
3. I'm not too sure why. Bought a humidifier.
4. I'm using the yeast and sugar method. It won't hurt.
 
I do suggest a less expensive lighting plan just for the seedling stage if not natural light . 2, 23 watt CFL's (2700K) horizontally are a good start. . Let em get tough before you blast them with all that 400 watt goodness. pH is NOT important at this stage. Just use tap water. I have been growing for 20 years and have owned a hydro store. Now retired. You are using one of the best soils (IMHO) and its full of nutes. soil is a natural buffer unless you screw it up and blast it with nutes and un pH'ed water. You dont want anything greater than 50% humidity, mold will set in. Hoping a good grow for you! And true. The c02 wont hurt. But its a bit more sophisticated process than you may understand yet. Hoping success to you.
 
I start my seedlings under 600watt mh and never had a problem, and have also started them under a 1000 watt and always have good results either way.
 
looks like we are grow partners. i just planted 5 plants about the same time you did and im having the same kind of slow growth ( i think its over watering, as i planted straight into 1 gal smart pots).

- im under a 1k watt MH right now with temps at 82 and RH at 35%. so your lighting as long as its not burning the plants and bleaching them out should be fine. the only thing your wasting is money on the extra wattage but for me your 600 watt would only be like 7 cents an hour to run so thats meh..

_Phing the water will not hurt the plant what so ever and as my natural ph comes out my tap at a whopping 7.5 i always ph down to 6.5 as this alows the most uptake of almost all nutrients ( at least my research shows this)

- The humidity may be a problem as ive read and researched that keeping at least above 30% is like minimum and at the seedling stage its advantageous to achieve 50% ( especially with high wattage lights) because basically the plants roots have not developed enough to uptake the water required to cool them selves in that kind of radiant heat. with the 50 percent humidity the leaves can actually pull water from the air to help along the plant until roots have developed.

- temp is perfect in my opinion

the co2 thing is the last thing you need to think about if you are not growing in a sealed environment.

other than the concern for size ( which previously stated maybe due to under watering) i would say your plants look happy and healthy.

good luck with the op ill be checking in to see how you and the babies are doing. ( also im a first time grower so if for some reason im spouting off at the mouth and an experienced grower contradicts my statements then fair play. The information ive given is to the best of my knowledge)

Aw that's awesome! We can update each other on our grows! Do you know what strain you planted? And when? I think mine had to do with under watering. My lights go off at 1:20 and I woke up late after a night of drinking so I couldn't check on them. :sleep:
-how big is your grow space? I had a hard time maintaining temps at 600 >.<
-yeah I bought distilled water and it comes out around 7.
-yeah I've read that humidity probably plays a part with the slow grow. I'm getting a humidifier in tomorrow so hopefully that helps. Also the thin leaves may be an indication as well.
-yeah temp I finally got under control :p
The only reason why I worry about co2 is because I grow in the basement and since it's still a bit chilly, we keep the window closed. And not a lot of people spend time down there. My ventilation also doesn't draw air from the outside so that's why I was assuming co2 was a problem. Already bought the yeast so it won't hurt, right? Good luck to you too! Do you have an email you wanna exchange progress on? I think it'd be fun :mrgreen: I'd like to see some pictures of your grow as well.
 
When using ocean forest on seedlings, you don't want to under/over water and you dont want high temps/low humidity. I used to start in ffof but excessive transpiration with seedlings in hot soil might give you issues. Either drop temps and raise humidity or use some cfl's for now.
