The single probe Rapidtest moisture meter is available from most of the major garden centers for under $20. This meter reads consistently without using batteries. It is invaluable for determining watering schedules, which vary tremendously from plant to plant, overwatered conditions, and uneven moisture distribution within the container. Rapidtest also sells a shorter, two probe model which should be avoided. Make this investment, monitor conditions regularly, and reap the rewards at harvest.

Growers that allow their medium to dry out to the point at which the leaves "droop" are reducing their final yields and quality. The medium contains a certain amount of salts that dramatically increase in concentration as the water dissipates. The roots can be repeatedly stressed going through this technique called "wet/dry cycle". The plant is being deprived of moisture that would be available to fuel additional growth and suffers.

if you have an inground plant you can go weeks without watering, plants in pots have to be watered more often

DoobsDay is right. There are so many factors that can make this vary. Depends on the type of soil, type of lights, how hot it is, etc.

just make sure your seedling dont get too dry. a few hours bone dry = you starting over.

as you plant gets more roots it can make it a little longer. for my adults they drink 2 quarts every 3rd day in 3.5 gal pot and flush every 7-10

well you always want to make sure it dries out a bit before you flower, temp, plant size, water retention of soil, can all play a big part in how much it will drink, if your top 2-3 inches is dry you should water and not before that, i would like to point out that for the first week or two the soil needs to stay completely moist, as the plant needs more roots before it can handle being without water.
