Using 3-gallon pots how much water should i be using when it is time to water the plants? or does it depend on frequency and size etc?
I am curious as i want to give them the proper amount of nutes

I'd start with a half gallon to get the soil soaking the water up ....let them sit for 10 minutes and then water until you get some run off out the bottom......keep it simple

The reason I like to water a little and then wait a few minutes to finish watering.....is because water can and will run straight through dry soil, as well as down the sides .......it allows the soil to sponge up the water instead of it running through and down the sides .....GL

Should hoist your plants to feel the weight and when they get feeling pretty light water them until they are saturated. What I do is use a 4L milk jug that I have marked off every 500ml and start with it full to the 4L mark. Then I soak a pot until it won't hold no more and there is little runoff. Make a mental note of how much it took, or write it down if you got oldtimerz disease like me. Then when they need a full watering just fill the jug up to the same they used and pour it in all at once if you're in a hurry. As long as the drip pan doesn't overflow it will suck up all the water up and be saturated leaving none in the pan to rot the roots. I use RO water and never try to get runoff.

If you are doing a bunch of pots the same size you can put them in a big tray and mix a batch of nutes in a 5gal water jug with the right amount to soak all the pots, pour it in the tray and you're done. Great way to do a SoG grow.

Good luck and good growing!

Those methods work fine...^^^^ So does mine....

I prefer to water a metered amount daily at lights on. I get more O2 to the roots on a regular basis that way..

When I up pot - There is a short lag in daily watering till the roots expand enough to use the daily watering.
4 cups (1000 ml) is an average - some get a bit more, later in veg as they approach the final up-potting......

What I think all successful growers have in common whether they water every day in soil or every 3 days is they let there soil dry out.
IMHO Dr. Who is successful with everyday watering because he always has an excellent root system. Alot of new growers would be better off watering using the 3 day system because they would have so many reasons to not have a great root system.
Dr. Who. When you water with 4 cups. Do your pots hit their dry weight the next morning? Or do you like them to dry out sooner than that?

In 3 gal pots. They are dry pretty much right there....I feel the soil to judge - Have for years, so it's like a built in thing.....every now and then they get very dry and i simply increase the amount a bit, at that point.

By the time they get to 5's and the roots are set (they sit 8-10 days in veg to do that - then move to bloom) they increase needs to the point of as much as 4 liters a day (1 gallon). this is all relative as they mature. The last week or so they tend to slow a bit and need less again. This can be the point they are rather close to harvest.

I've used several containers sizes and typically use 1/3/5gal pots. Observations over time my rule of thumb is 1/4 gallon for every gallon of soil/medium. I say 1/4 gallon but it's actually 1 litre per gallon of medium because my watering cans come in 7 litre size. Watering in stages as many have already mentioned so it doesn't all run off, that amount tends to be enough to completely soak the medium top to bottom and just a tiny bit of run-off. I let mine dry out before watering again.

Pot size is important when determining a watering schedule. When I am using 3-gallon pots to finish flowering I water daily with 2 cups of water with liquid nutes included. When we get hot streaks like right now I'll increase the watering to 3 cups daily.

Good luck, BigSteve.

You must have a lot of time to water everyday lol. I prefer every 2 to 3 days. LITRE for every gallon will get ya there.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Whoops sorry. Waa going to say watering everyday can be a pain for some but if you follow the rule 1 litre for every gallon of soil or soil less you water roughly every 2-3 days.

I watered my 2 gal pots with 2L per. Had very little runoff but it's seems like my soil got super compact when I stick my finger in it after doin so. I have at least 40% perlite in my mix. Plants are two weeks old. I'm hoping they will be fine as I see no drooping or yellowing. Just want some reassurance. Sorry if my post is inappropriate just stressin
