Water temps ?

High DWC water temps have always been a problem for me as well....this time I've totally covered my rubbermaid roughneck tote with HVAC aluminum foil tape...it's dark as hell in there now...just gotta cover the sight tube with some pipe insulation (that can be removed) and I'm hoping I won't have the high water temps again...

water chiller is not an option for me at this time either

I might have to go the frozen 16oz bottle trick if it happens again as well

Good luck on your grow! :-)
Foil gets hot very fast and heats up whatever its on... I think the foil tape is a bad idea to block and reflect heat. IMO paint the tubs black to block light and prevent algae and bacteria growth. And then paint them white on top to reflect the light and heat.

i have a 1/5 hp chiller running 24/7 for a 20 gallon cloner res with a 20 watt air pump blowing into it and the water temps swing from 60F at night to 70 in the day. btw if you do get a chiller you have to sit it out side your grow room or it wont work that well, you will just be adding hot air back into the room.

I don't think bleach is a good idea. I posted another tread about it on here. Ph down and bleach don't mix. And Pythium can survive in .5 ppm depends on the strain. 2 ppm is another story but just don't use bleach with these chemicals. Good luck

....but wouldn't the tape reflect light? I'm thinking that even if I can't get the perfect water temp at least the res would be totally void of light inside to prevent algae?

It does reflect light but if its got any wrinkles it will reflect hot spots on areas of the plants flat white paint is 99% reflective. And always goes on flat. You should be okay just watch your water temps they might get even higher than without the foil tape.
