Wanting to Make Sure I'm Doing This Right?

Hey guys,
So I've completely read through the newbie forum and quite a few other sites of growing, but this is the only one I've found that has it's own aerogarden sub-forum which is why I joined. Anyhoo, I'm not completely new to growing plants as I have a tech degree for horticulture, but this plant is a little different then what we grew. Right now I have 7 plants in an Aerogarden pro 200, these 7 are a mix of purple haze and bubblegum kush. I know that they can not all stay in the Aerogarden and once they get about 4" tall I plan to transplant 4 of them to soil and maybe more depending on how the three left in the Aerogarden grow. I've seen several youtube videos of Aerogarden grows which is why I chose to go with one, especially since I got it for free. I'm using rockwool as my growing medium and maxigrow (10-5-14) as my growing fertilizer, I have maxibloom (5-15-14) for when I put them into bud mode. Right now my babies are a week old (started Oct 1st) and I pre-sprouted them in a moist paper towel. I actually sprouted too many seeds as I had expected a lot of them to be duds since my friend collected them and doesn't know how to keep seeds. I ended up with 14/20 from which I picked my 7. Currently I have my Aerogarden on the 24hr light setting and in a couple weeks I'll probably change it to 18/6. My plan is to grow them under the CFL of the Aerogarden but surrounded by some white poster board to reflect more light back onto the plants (or there might be something better? I heard that mirrors are actually bad for light reflection). After a month when I start the 12/12 light cycle for bud, I plan to switch to a 150watt hps lamp. Does this sound like a good set-up and plan? I know that ideally I'd have more light and space, but I'm poor and live with other people (they don't care that I grow), so I don't want to make the electric bill go up too much since we share it and they don't smoke. Oh, I also have a ph kit and have adjusted the water to about 5.5-6. I just moved my plants to the Aerogarden yesterday and they seem to be doing really well. Over the course of the next week I do plan to buy an airstone if I can afford it...

Also, does anyone have some good ideas on how to cat proof an Aerogarden?

Welcome to RIU. I cant wait to see how your grow turns out. Hopefully you update regularly. Check out my sig for my AG journal. I have four in there now but at least one is looking like its going to be a male. My only recommendation to you now would be get more light. Its really easy to stretch your plants with the stock AG hood. With extra light I was able to get some super tight inter-nodal spacing.

Fuzzbutter: I'm using mirrors without any problems, except that my wife had a fit when she found I'd ripped off her wire platter display frames from her china hutch to support my mirrors.

As far as the cat is concerned you might want to keep it out of your grow room. When I grew in the garage I had some very happy field mice.

If you get too many plants, as I'm sure we all have had, consider this: go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get some new one quart plastic paint containers with lids. cut a hole in the lid just big enough for your A/G planting cage, give them a good heavy paint job so no light gets in to your roots, pipe in a little round air stone from the 99 cents store, fill it with nutes and put it close enough to your A/G to use the same light. Rotate them daily since they're on the perimeter of your light and watch them grow. The quart containers wil be just about a s high as the planting deck and you might want to put them in a saucer just in case. I've done that with as many as three extra plants that sprouted as the A/G can only accommodate two to three.

Thanks for the responses guys :D. In the 3 days that my plants have been in the AG, the growth difference between them and their soil counterparts is just...amazing...I'm quite frankly in shock as to how much more they are growing, they are over double the size in just 3 days!!!

assasinofyouth420: thanks for letting me know I'm on the right path :)

HSA: Just read that white surfaces are actually better reflectors than mirrors because while mirrors do reflect light, they also absorb a lot of it, so you're only reflecting back about 60-70%, mylar reflects about 80-90% and it's about the same for flat white surfaces. At least that's what I've read so far..anyhoo, I have WAY too many plants to be able to keep them on the same light and I will have to do a major cull within the month :( I have 14, the max I want to grow is 7 (3 in the AG 4 in soil)...and that's pushing it as I was only expecting a few seeds to take. The cat though...she's my cat and the AG is in my room...sooo...xD

robert 14617: LAWLZ!!

These are the updated pics of the 7 I have in my AG. I have 3 different types apparently as I can clearly see 3 different leaf types. The one on the far right my cat bent, but I gave it a wire support and it's doing fine...damn cat...
